How do you Feel if Being Misunderstood?

Hey, I just got the following two comments from the same person today under my article Golarger.com – NET SEND Spamer and Comment Spammer. This guy insisted that I use golarger as free adertisement and the forum I setup is definitely not to help people. He also reported my site to FCC.

GREAT THEY NOT ONLY PISS US OFF AND WASTE OUR TIME……BUT WANT TO CREATE A MAILING LIST FROM THIS COMMENT FORM….I AM WRITING FCC.GOV WITH THIS ASSHOLES IP ADDRESS AND LET THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DEAL WITH HIM.

PEOPLE IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS WITH ANY FORM OF COMMUNICATION WRITE FCC.GOV….THEY ARE VERY RESPONSIVE AND THEY WILL GET THE ABUSERS TO CALL YOU BACK PERSONALLY….

Posted by: jmyjm on April 21, 2003 01:14 PM

PEOPLE, THE REASON THIS GUY HAS A FORUM IS DEFINATELY NOT TO HELP YOU……THIS ASS IS USING “GOLARGER” AS A WAY TO GET FREE ADVERTISING TO HIS SITE..WHY DO YOU THINK HE PAID PREMIUM FOR YAHOO SEARCH LISTING.

Posted by: BRWBRWB on April 21, 2003 01:21 PM

I am very angry

I am very angry when I saw his comment.Actually, I have received some complains on my board asking the spammer to stop sending the spam to them. I am not the spammer. I kept about half of them and delete those with too many dirty words – the words are insulting every reader’s eyes.

However, I never expect to get such comments when I started to discuss about the topic. jmyjm or BRWBRWB (they are the same person) insisted that it was me who send out the NET SEND SPAM to all the people as a way to advertise my site – how can it be possible!!! He even reported the IP address of the web site to FCC – I have to say it is crazy.

The facts

I don’t think I need to spare a single word to explain the situation. All the frequent visitors know what the site is for. It is a personal weblog discussing the topics that affects my life and many other people’s lives. Recent topics include SARS, net send spam and MSN Messenger Spam and travel to places like daocheng. There is no commercial content on this site.

But the comments about the evil motivation really let me feel very upset. Why the creative guy has to think I am using Golarger as a way to get free advertisement to my site? Why can he claim that “THE REASON THIS GUY HAS A FORUM IS DEFINATELY NOT TO HELP YOU……”. I cannot think of a worse statement like this.

How this site is related to the a**hole golarger keyword?

OK. ymyjm, if you want to know more details, I can tell you the whole story. It is the simple 7 steps.

  1. On Sept 23, 2002, I got my first spam pop-up on my own computer screen, I wrote angrily about it in this entry: “Net Send” – Yet Another Type of Spam
  2. One month and a half later, that is November 7, 2002, I posted the solution to stop net send spam. I even wrote Fighting back for NET SEND SPAM.
  3. 3 months later, that is on Feb 14, 2003, a person named James left a comment on my previous entry with the following content:

I mean, honestly… www.golarger.com should be the target of the next “Code Red”…

Posted by: James on February 14, 2003 02:25 AM

  4. Three days later, February 17, 2003, I found many visitors came to my site when search for term “golarger.com” in Google or Yahoo!. I was quite puzzled why people will come to my site for this term. Then I found out the comment James left three days before. So I commented on this event in the entry named Golarger.com – NET SEND Spamer and Comment Spammer. In this entry, I claimed that golarger is not only a net send spamner, but the comment spammer who posted his advertisement on my comment system.
  5. After sometime, maybe it is because lots of people are complaining to the ISP of Golarger.com, as SImo did, the domain name of golarger.com no longer works. When people type golarger.com, instead of going to the spammer’s website (because it is down), most browsers use search engines to find the best match. Unfortunately, my article on this topic are always as the first record – it is because this site is doing a better job to provide information than the spammer’s site.
  6. I don’t know why, but the spammer is still sending out the Net Send Spam even when his website is down. So I posted Physical Location of GOLarger.com with satalite photos and hope it can help to stop it.
  7. Lots of people was outranged when seeing the dialog box, type in golarger.com at address book in his/her browser, and get to my site. They found the comment system before they check the content and wrote down all the dirty words they can think of on the board. Well. I can understand that – they were just careless and didn’t mean to hurt me. But I cannot stand jmyjm’s comment since he obversely checked out the site and know the whole context – his comment is completely insult at me.

There is no advertisement on this site and I don’t sell goods. Why do I need to send the annoying spam to you? Think about it before leave the comment!

I need your support

Actually, you know, it is very discouraging to see comments like this. I threw money to my ISP to rent the hosts and spent quite some time every night – from 23:00 to 24:00 – to keep this site up to date. I am trying to provide the information people needs and try to help people. It is the case for SARS and NET SEND SPAM. But how do you feel if you are misunderstood? How do YOU feel?

East Radio Station Goes Online

People kept asking me what it really is to live in Shanghai. I have talked about the living cost before, now, let’s talk about radio stations.

Recently, the most popular radio station in Shanghai – the East Radio Station (ERS), begin to broadcast on the net in real time. If you haven’t decided to move to Shanghai yet, check out the radio station below and get a sense of what it feels like to be in Shanghai.

Update Online Radio Station Location Moved January 14, 2004

The website is changed for whatever reason – it was an IP address like 61.172.245.178 and not it moved to http://www.eastradio.com/netradio/. It seems those guys behind the webpage became smarter – so I assume they will not change it again. I have updated my links and hopefully, it is working now. Thanks for Wei’s reminder. – End of update –

East Radio Station – Pop Music Channel FM101.7

This is my favoriate radio station. It provides the latest music. I believe it should be the starting place for you to try if you don’t know much Chinese. Most of the content are music, so just enjoy.

East Radio Station – News and Misc Channel AM792/FM104.5

Image credit: Shanghai East Radio Station website.

This is the offical news source. Current, not so many people are listening to this channel now – at least for my friends – if they turn on radio, they will listen to Pop Music channel. For me, I seldom turn on radio unless I am on a taxi.

East Radio Station – News Channel AM990

I am confused about what is the difference between this channel and the AM792 news channel, but my life always start with the AM990 news everyday when I was in the university – the big high volume speaker to start to broadcast the AM990 News program. People in Shanghai, especially those who cannot access TV and Internet (like some university students, taxi drivers, and the poor), this channel is the main information source for events like Iraq War and SARS.

East Radio Station – Classic Music Channel

Never heard of this channel and not interested in it either.

Other Channels:

Good start

It is a good start to migrate the radio to Internet. I found it is using the latest Windows Media technology. You need to have Windows Media Player 9.0 to play the sounds. You can download free of charge at Microsoft’s website.

April 18. It is reported by the official newspaper that SARS cases were found in central China’s Henan province. They are returning workers in Zhumadian, Nanyang and Kaifeng. The cases were found on April 16 and 17.

I summarize the situation by the official announcement – actually, the news report is always treated as official announcement since if the officials does not approve, the news cannot come out regarding these sensitive topics:

The following map is spreading quickly on the net and via emails. The circles denotes the infected areas. Note: I don’t think there are any solid evidence behind this map. Take it as rumor only.

Resumed from the Short Pause of Service

Yesterday, this website experienced short pause in the comment system. It is because of the disk of the server is full so cause the corruption of comment database on the server. Now I have rebuilt the whole MovableType sytem from scratch and take the chance to upgrade it to MovableType 2.63.

I used the backup data on April 13, then manually inputed the entries after that time (5 entries) with the comments. Now most of the comments and articles are on the new system. However, I am afraid some comments between April 13 and April 17 are permently lost. I am very sorry for that.

I have informed the system adimistrator of the server to clean up the server disk – actually it is really wired that the build result of the MovableType is incomplete. I checked I still have a lot of disk space but it just refuse to build the right page. Then I believe the disk of the server itself was full. I called the operator and it is confirmed.

Daily Life – SARS Related

I found SARS has been part of people’s life these days. There are too many things that remind you of the existance of SARS in the city.

Sticker in taxi

The first thing I noticed is a yellow sticker on right part of the dashboard in the taxi I took. The sticker is about 30 CM in width, stating:

SARS can be cured. Don’t panic. If you found the following symptoms: Fever, headache, an overall feeling of discomfort, and body aches, please call this number immediately:

021-52285500

The same yellow sticker was sticked just in front of the passenger’s seat on the first row in the car. It also appeared on many taxis. When I took the Dazhong taxi home at night, I found the same sticker. According to the taxi driver, the notice was sticked there at the begining of today.

Topic

When I sit down to have my dinner at the table in a restraunt in Xujiahui, I noticed the couple near my table were talking about SARS – it is very common that people talk about SARS every where.

News paper

Picking up the latest Xin Min Evening, two headlines are all about SARS – one said that the central government is paying enough attention to the situation of SARS; the other talk about the SARS precautions the city had took. SARS related news been the headline of local newspapers for about a week.

Radio

Whenever I get on taxi these days, I will ask the driver to turn on radio – there are always some pieces of news on SARS – most of them are positive – reporting the SARS has been under control; or SARS patients have recovered and have left the hospital…

TV

On Oriential TV, most of the SARS topics are related to actions taken to prevent SARS from spreading. When I opened TV today, I got to know that Shanghai has be second confirmed case of SARS – the father of the previous SARS patient. According to the news report, the situation of both of them are stable.

Taxi driver

I happened to talked with a 40-year-old taxi driver today. He comes from the Dazhong taxi company. I asked whether the news of “all taxi are disinfected everyday” is true or not. He just told me: “My taxi was disinfected one month ago – they just push the spayer bottle twice and told me, your car has been disinfected. I don’t believe it will have any real effect.” He also added. “However, I am not afraid of SARS at all – I don’t believe I will get hit.”

Search items

I analyzed the visit log of this website today and found some visitors come to my site by typing the following search terms in search engines. You can see what people are thinking about these days.

Joke

A man was reported to be ejected by airlines for SARS joke. He said he got SARS on the plane and caused panic. It turned out he is only playing a joke but he was ejected by the caption with two friends. People are already too nervous and don’t play jokes any more.

But this photo is really interesting.

Wangjianshuo.Com Featured in Shanghai Magzine

I am surprised to find out that wangjianshuo.com on the local newspaper named Shanghai Magzine.

Here is the translation:

Being a personal website, Wang Jian Shuo’s is much more special. As a excellent graduate in the IT industry, Wang Jian Shuo take high command of technology of website. This personal website is clear in structure, the massive hyperlink looks just like a special maze – it is not intend to confusing people; it brings pleasure and enjoyment for visitors. For visit coming from aboard, this website is a window for Shanghai and a sketch of the young generation of Shanghai.

Thanks for Xiaolong for reporting my site in the popular magzine.

No SARS Case in Fujian – People Daily

This is to help Anna and anyone non-Chinese speaking persons who concerns about the SARS situation in Fujian. The People Daily’s report was in Chinese. I am trying to translate it into English. Note: I don’t want a accurate word by word translation – just deliver some basic ideas so you are informed.

April 11, Fuzhou. Zhao Peng report.

Recently, the Fujian Tourism Bureau held the “May 1 Holiday Seasons Press Conference”. The Bureau Chief Ming Min said that there is no case of SARS found in Fujian Province so far. Fujian is still the “Safest Tour Destination”

Impacted by SARS, a portion of travelers concern about the safety to tour in the May 1 Chinese holiday seasons. The personal in the Health Bureau of Fujian pointed out that these concerns are completely unnecessary. Till now, there is no SARS case in Fujian, let alone any death for this disease…….

Anyone know the English edition of this news? I didn’t spend much time and effort to translate the article.

MSN Messenger Spam

I hate NET SEND SPAM, and I have been fighting with it for a long time by helping people to disable the Messenger services or install firewalls. I have clearly stated that the Messenger Service NET SEND SPAM used is NOT the MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger.

However, there comes the new type of spam – MSN Messenger Spam.

MSN Mesenger Spam is more annoying and dangerous than NET SEND SPAM

Here is the screen shot of the forth messenge I got in the last four hours.

screen-msn.messenger.spam-christina.PNG

It is more annoying and dangrous because:

  1. I can turn off the Messenger Service to prevent NET SEND SPAM from appearing, since the messenger service is seldom used. But MSN Messenger is the tool I use everyday to communicate with my friends
  2. Firewall and other techniques may be not easy to block this kind of spam since the connection with the server is always kept alive. The content flow within this connection is seldom checked. (I may be wrong on this. Correct me if I made the wrong statement.)
  3. NET SEND SPAM only deliver messenges and the user has too retype it in browser to visit the spammer’s website. But MSN Messenger’s message can display URL and the page is just one click a way. What if the page contains virus code? People seldom take the download-file-warning seriously.

How this happend?

Actually, it is very annoying to me since till now, I didn’t find out the reason why it appeared. The common sense for MSN Messenger is, if some one is not on my contact list, he cannot send messenges to me. In other words, I need to either add them to my contact list by myself, or accept their add request before we can talk. But this person ugly_tcharlesz@hotmail.com is not on my contact list!

I will investigate this and post my answers

Stay tuned. I will find out how they send these spam and post solution to disable it in the next few days. If you know the answer and solution, please let me know too.

Update: Reasons and solutions found April 14, 2003

After investigating this for some time and also got help from people like Jonathan Kay [MVP] in the newsgroup, I finally find out how the spammer did it and the solution to fix this problem.

It seems the new version of .NET Meseengers enables anyone to send you a message WITHOUT being on your contact list.

How to do this? (I am using the Windows Messenger that comes with Windows XP as example here)

  1. Open the Messenger Main window, click Send an Instant Message… on Action menu. The Send an Instant Message dialog box appeared.
  2. Click on the Other tab. Enter any Passport e-mail address into “Enter e-mail address:” input box and send a message to them, without being on their contact list.

    screen-msn.messenger-send.an.instant.message.other.PNG

Looks dangerous, isn’t it?

Solution

The solution is simple.

  1. Open MSN Messenger main window.
  2. Click Options… on Tools window.
  3. Switch to Privacy tab.
  4. Select “All Other Users” in the My Allow List and click “Block>>” button. The “All Other Users” groups will appear in the My Block List list box.
  5. Click OK to save your settings.

Now, only those who are on your contact list can send message to you and you are free of such spam now.

Update Works in Trillian also May 18, 2003

Thanks Kynan for letting us know that the following steps works in Trillian also.

  1. Go To Preferences (Right click tray icon, Options, Preferences)
  2. Scroll down to “Chatting Services” and MSN. Under the MSN option select Privacy
  3. Hidden amongst your contacts is the “All other users” contact in your “My Allow List”, select it and click on the “Block>>” button
  4. Hit OK and voila, no more spam.

Are the Media Directing the Right Way?

Regarding the recent SARS outbreak in China and then to the world, I am very happy to see the lift of the ban in media. From the begining of April, the public awareness of SARS has been greatly improved with the term “atypical pnuemonia” repeatedly shown in TV, radio, newspaper, magzine and websites. Note: In China, the virus is called “atypical pnuemonia” (AP), not SARS.

Good to see the media coverage

Chinese media, especially the Internet portal like Sina, Sohu and Netease, are actually very smart and very sensitive to breaking news – just like any news website in any country, hit rate is always the first priority for them. After offical news of SARS was release from designated offical news source, which is a signal for the unlift of the ban of this topic, they are rushing at the fastest speed to cover this topic. For example, Sina has created special report for SARS (Chinese site) with about 20 piece of news every day. For example, there are 21 piece of news on SARS on April 12 and 19 on April 13.

News aimed to release the panic

Here are some sample news headlines from the most popular web site Sina.com in the last two days. (Chinese sites)

No SARS case found in Helongjiang province 20030412

First SARS patient in Beijing Bascially Recovered (20030412 18:43)

National Tour Administration: Tour lines to Singopore, Malaysia and Thailand paused (20030412 10:58)

There is no SARS in Fujian. Take it Easy in May 1 Holiday (20030411 22:43)

Among the news report, I found this one interesting: Experts Explained SARS Prevention Knowledges, Citizens Took Off Faical Masks Immediately (Chinese site).

According to the “expert”, people should not wear facial masks. Facial masks are only needed when 1) If you go to hosptial 2) If you are infected by SARS 3) If you are the doctor 4) If SARS patients is near you. He also added that wearing a facial masks will do harm for the health. There are at least three reasons:

  1. Increase anxiecity of yourself.
  2. Cause panic in the people around you
  3. Cause inconvience of your respiration

To make sure the readers understand how well the doctor’s job was done, the reporter even added “before the doctors continued, the person who consulted the doctor took off her facial mask immediately”

I begin to worry again that when the meida are directing people to relax and don’t panic, will it help to control SARS? Especially when the experts are asking people to take off facial masks just to release the panic, will SARS situation be better?

Overall situation is moving positively

The media only report the positive sides of the situation. It is good to certain extend. What really made me feel safer is to see the solid work to control SARS is being done.

Lots of companies are disinfecting their working places. Taxi drivers, airlines, hotels and all public places have joined the disinfection movement. I believe it will be much effective way to control SARS.

Only after we see more and more solid actions like this, we will feel safer.

Shall I Cancel my Trip to Shanghai?

Concerning the recent outbreak of SARS in Asia, especially in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province of China, WHO has issued warning to travelers against going to China. I saw the questions like this in the message boards of this site: “I have booked my tickets to Shanghai in this May. Shall I cancel my trip to Shanghai? Do you have any advice?”

To cancel or not to cancel, it is a question

Well. It is not an easy question to answer. If you ask about my advice, I will tell you two facts about Shanghai. The first is, you won’t feel the fear in Shanghai now. The life is going on and shops still opens. Schools are not closed and seldom can you see people wearing facial masks. It is a city of 16 million people. The official one case of SARS is relatively a smaller number (although I do think there are some cases not counted in the official report). So you don’t have to worry about going to Shanghai. The second fact is, like traveling to any area of the world now, the SARS is there and you have the risk to get infected when you set your foot to a SARS infected area. The risks of SARS, I believe, are not very high – at least not higher than other infectious disease.

My personal suggestion: Go ahead to Shanghai

I am living in this city. Millions of foreigners are also living in this city (3% of the population). It is not the worst of time to come to this city. The only factor to consider is the concerns of the people around you in your country about your trip after your return – people in your neighborhood may think you are dangerous – actually you are not if you don’t see the symptoms on you.

Shanghai is still beautiful and nice – like many people have experienced. There are certainly some risks there – this is for sure. But I don’t think it has to prevent you from coming this city.

When I talked with my friends in Shanghai today asking their suggestions for whether a foreigner should come to Shanghai or cancel the trip. Their answer is positive. They suggest to come but do some precautions – don’t go to public places and stay away from any one who coughs.

Public oppinions from CNN is negitive about the travel

Just checked CNN’s quick vote on the topic.

Would the warning from the World Health Organization make you change your travel plans to Hong Kong or China?

92% choosed YES

8% choosed NO

It is reasonable.

If you ask me “Will you cancel your trip to Iraq?” (if I did planned the trip), my answer is definitely NO, because of the war. But the fact is, not all areas of Iraq is affected by the war. There are some villages that are not important that either Iraqi or U.S. army will pay attention to. They are relatively safe – Shall I say that?

So before you make decision, just consider China is large, much larger than any other south Asia country. The outbreak of one province or city, as shown on TV or website, may not neccessarily be regarded as the situation of the entire country.

Negitive reasons for not to go

Meanwhile, please get aware of the following factors when you come to Shanghai.

1) The official information may not be the actual number. This can be seen via the conflicts of numbers. So do keep alerted no matter what the public is saying.

2) The SARS is highly infectious. The situation now is OK, but who knows about tomorrow. A large scale breakout troughout the city or country is still possible. At that time, it may not be easy to get back to where you come. The flights may be either cancelled or policy (of China or your country) prohibit you from going back if the situation become worse.

The decision is yours.

To my readers,

No matter you cancel or continue your trip, may God be with you and may you be safe and happy.

Panic Under Control. SARS May Not

On contrast with the no any news in March, April is the month the term of “Atypical Pneumonia” has been put the headlines of all major news papers (online and traditional)

The change started when the Minister of Health hosted the media conference at the begining of April. Before that event, no matter what media it is, you just cannot find anything about the already hot term SARS or “atypical pneumonia”, just as no body in the media industry has even heard of them. The media conference broken the silence. The media conference was played again and again in CCTV – at least I have watched for twice. The headline of almost all media changed to “SARS under control” the next day.

The Panic is “under control”. But how about SARS

If you watch TV or pick up newspaper in Shanghai now, just be sure that you can watch or read news about SARS. It is the hot term in media now. BUT, all stating the situation is under control. “there is NO sars in Shanghai” or “There is only one case in Shanghai”. People are very happy to see the news. For those who has Internet access are still aware of the danger. But how about those who use TV and newspaper as the only source of information? Will they really relax and abandon all precautions? What if there are any infection chains that were not discovered in this big city?

Detailed information gave me more confidence

I have to say Shanghai is doing a great job so far in the improving information disclosure. The SARS related news has taken about 1/6 of the time of evening news on Shanghai TV and Orient TV. It is reported that 4 hosipitals have been identified as the special treatment hospital for SARS in Shanghai, among them, one are specially idenfied for foreigners. The news program has shown the video of these hospitals and the doctors there said that although no SARS cases were found, they are completely ready for the coming SARS patients if there is any in Shanghai.

Taxi and metro tickets disinfectant

The TV also shows the scene that all Dazhong taxis were disinfected. The metro tickets are also been disinfected one by one by the metro staff. It seems very good and the life in Shanghai should be safer – at least people are taking actions.

The campaigns of SARS awareness are also going on. I saw the black board of SARS prevention instructions have been laid in lots of residental areas. The preventional measures were also been posted in the elevator of my apartment. As soon as people are aware of this and take actions, the SARS is not that dangerous.

SARS: Culture Shock?

I read about Anna’s comments about her concerns on SARS. Mainlander followed up.

SHANGHAI KNIGHT: ok… let me get this straight… i may get SARS from someone who doesn’t show any symptoms because he is still in the incubation period?

WEI SONG: i live in xiamen and let me tell you that no one knows for sure if there have been SARS infected people here. we’ve heard of 2 university students dying but nothing official has been reported. our professors keep telling us that we shouldn’t panic but because the media has been so “hush-hush” about it we have become more paranoid. the locals are still unaware of the real danger of this virus. everyone still spits everywhere and everyone still coughs and sneezes without trying to cover thier mouths. it’s really difficult for me because i have a little baby and yet i have to realize that this is just how it is. i’m still waiting for “OFFICIAL NEWS”. till then i don’t have a choice but to live in fear. as soon as i’m done with my business here, i’m flying out of here and never coming back. unfortunately, many foreigners also feel the way i feel which is bad for China.

final thought: how could there be no SARS in Xiamen? We’re close to HongKong and the GuanDong Province.

oh… i forgot to mention something…

2 months ago my baby developed some kind of gastroenteritis. at that time i was unaware that there was this SARS outbreak. I took my baby to Xiamen’s #1 hospital and the Doctor on duty gave him RIBAVIRIN. At that time I was puzzled as to why they would give antibiotics used for Respiratory problems to my child who had gastroenteritis. Just this morning i realized… maybe they thought it was sars. Maybe it was SARS. If so… they didn’t tell me anything. they just gave my baby the medication via drip then asked us to go home. My baby is now ok but what if he didn’t get well. what if something happened to him… who would i balme? shouldn’t they be more transparent to the patients? i get goose bumps everytime i think about what happened.

Anna: I am not a doctor but I know Ribavirin may be used for a wide variety of virus-related deseases. Prescription of ribavirin did not necessarily mean your boy was ill with SARS, or the doctor intentionally held back the facts. However, it is strongly recommended you should consult with your doctor at home before using any drugs prescribed by a Chinese doctor, esp for your boy. In addition, note that injection is Chinese doctors’ favorite but has proved to be extremely dangerous here in China as you might get hepatitis or HIV in this way, even if you use disposable syringes in a seemingly good hospital. See a doctor from your home country or make an IDD call to your own doctor, you will find out the difference.

Text in contesy for Anna and Mainlander. I assume by posting to the board, you granted me the right to quote your comment here. Let me know if you’d like to remove it from this article.

Well. First of all, I’d like to thank Anna and Mainlander to share what they think about the situation with us. I can understand Anna’s concerns about her body – definitely I can feel tha anxiousity. I agree with Mainlander to some extend that you need to be very careful recently even with a doctor. However, I just want to raise the topic of culture shock here and would like everyone of you to comment to express what do you think about it.

Culture shock, or something else?

Whenever someone moves to a different place, especial to a different country, the culture shock will be huge. The shock will be extereme if you move from a western country to China – the typical eastern culture and the developing country.

You will find lots of strange things that you can not understand – the way drivers drive, the way people talking with you, the habits people have here, – almost everything.

This reminded me of an example – may not be properiate to mention here – but just some hints. When the virus of AIDS began to spread to the world, people here in China were so worried. It is generally believed that ALL foreigners are very “dangerous”. I still remember the fear when I saw a foreigner on street in the city. I know some people were very hesitate to shake hand with foreigners although they know AIDS won’t spread via hand shaking. (HIV/AIDS kills an estimated 8,000 people every day; 3 million people per year.) Don’t get me wrong – I completely disagree with the idea now and believe the outbreak of the virus in one place should be regarded as the problem of the whole nation. However, lack of information and mutal understanding causes fear. SARS may be the similar case now, although they are so different in many aspect.

Doctors, believe them or not?

I think the Chinese doctors should still be realiable although some precautions can be taken, such as consulting home doctors. At least they see thousands of patients very month. I do agree that they need to improve their professionalism.

Take precautions, but be calm

My personal suggestion is, take all precautions you can, but be calm. The situation is bad, but MAYBE not as bad as you think – the combination of the panic and the culture shock gave everybody too much pressure.

P.S. I worried if this article is flaming article. I didn’t mean to offend anybody. I just wanted to discuss on the culture shock factors in the SARS-times.

Will Lineage Help Sina?

G asked me about the newly announced cooperation between Sina and NCsoft on Lineage. To be honest, I am not an online game fun. I am talking about this topic from the outsider’s point of view.

Internet Cafes are Popular

In the year of 2002, millions of net cafe emerges throughout China. Whenever you go, you will find the Internet Cafe – in “second-tier” cties like Luoyang, even in Daocheng.

The core business of the Internet Cafes, however, is not the Internet access. By my rough estimation, about 1/2 of the so called Internet Cafe does not provide Internet service. They provide online games to game players.

Online games including some games that don’t need a server. Examples are CS (Counter Strike) and Q3. People with one computer can directly connects to other’s computer on a peer to peer mode to play the game. This sort of games does not need a server so the it is cheap to play. I heard it is about 2-5 RMB per hour.

Online game – Legend

Legend from Korea company AtoZ is absolutely the biggest winner of online game. It granted the permission of server operation to a Chinese company called Shenda (shenda.com). It license the Internet Cafe to run the Legend clients. The Internet Cafes don’t charge the player directly, but the hours they spend on the computers greatly increases such bring more money to the cafes. It is said that a license for Legend will greatly help the business of the Internet Cafe.

Meanwhile, Shenda also sells “value-card” to players to get access to the game. The “value-card” is very profitable since some players will send 1,000 RMB per month on the value card. The Internet Cafe business owner will also get a small margine to sell the value-card.

Besides the income for computer-hours, and value-card, the drinks, and foods served by the Internet cafe also make a large portion of the profit for Intetnet cafes due to the large number of visitors and the long time they spend in the cafe.

The value chain continues

Currently, there are even some people who make a living by playing the online games. The virtual goods in the online games are labelled with value in real money and they can always get a good price in the market. Some goods in Legend can be sold at 1000 RMB to 5000 RMB. According to Sina’s special report (Chinese site), someone sold 5 “magic books” at 5000 RMB each – that is 25,000 RMB. Very nice deal, isn’t it?

To get more goods in the virtual world, they work very hard – actually, they are not players – they are professionals to get more goods in the virtual world and sell them out in the real world. I cannot understand the reason why people are willing to buy the goods but it really happens in the young generation in China.

Money. Money!

At least up to now, online game means money in China. The value chain, as I described, include

  • The game provider, like AtoZ or NCSoft
  • The operator, like Shenda or Sina
  • The Internet cafe – millions of them
  • The gurus in the game field – who sell their goods
  • The players – who seem to have unlimited budget on games

The chain will allocate the money from millions of players among the game provider, the operator, the Internet cafe and other people like those who sell goods.

Lineage means profit to Sina

As you can see, the launch of the new game Lineage will put Sina to the position of the operator and it will definitely be the powerhouse for the profit of Sina.

Shanghai Looks Good – Despit of SARS

The sunny weather continues. The rumor of SARS discontinued. With the recent official news on SARS from the Ministry of Health, the ban for news on the topic of SARS is lifted. Newspapers, TVs, radios and websites rush to report SARS in one night, just as the speed of spreading Bill Gate’s news.

I haven’t tried metro since the first day I heard about SARS. Yesterday, I had a try. I didn’t see any one with a mask then. It is said that about 5-20 people wearing facial masks in metro during the rush hours.

In the bus, I didn’t find any one wearing masks too. People insists to open the window eve in the air-conditioned bus. The only two masks I have ever seen is in the bund areas. The official news reports again and again that there is NO SARS in Shanghai. Shanghai is clean and safe. Don’t need to wear masks…..

I also see another large group of visitor from U.S. in the Ever Bright Hotel. One of them was wearing NATO logo clothes.

P.S. Below is the new version of home page on my blog. Hopefully, it will be online in one week.

Shanghai Saturday

It is such a sunny Saturday here in the city of Shanghai. Good weather gives me very good mood. It rained for 3 days in the last week. I am caught by one of the rain that I was completely wet although I have a umbrella. You can imagine how happy I am to have the sunny (Satur)Day.

New Scanner

With the wedding ceremony in Luoyang coming soon, we decided to create a grant website for the event and create some videos to be played. We have hundreds of photos that need to be scanned. So I rushed into the computer store and bought a Founder F5580 scaner. Just guess the price – 320 RMB (36 USD). It is much cheaper than before – I am not sure whether this price is higher or lower than that in U.S.

Pictures contesy for Tom.com

There are some 500 RMB scanners with 1200dpi resolution. I believe that 600dpi is good enough for me since 300dpi can produce a picture twice as large as the computer screen from a 6′ photo.

Lupu Bridge

Everyday, I will pass the Lupu Bridge in taxi. As the world largest arch bridge, it is almost completed – at least from the eyes of a outsider – the shape and the roads seem be to have been ready. Today, however, is the first day we went onto the bridge – due to the left-turn road construction, all traffic were directed to the bridge and take U-turn on the bridge, then run to the original direction. Hard to understand, isn’t it? Refer to the map below – the original left-turn road were blocked and we took right turn, then u-turn on the bridge (dotted line in the map).

Hand drawn by Jian Shuo Wang. Thanks for the new scanner

I am very excited to see the splendid new bridge. I didn’t bring camera with me. So check this picture of the bridge which was taken 7 months ago.

When completed, it will offer a shortcut from Puxi to Pudong, espcially the Pudong Airport. The Nanpu bridge will be off loaded.

This Site Listed on MSNBC.COM, as SARS Blog

To my surprise, I found my site was listed on MSNBC.com. Here is the URL:

http://www.msnbc.com/news/809307.asp

In a similar vein, Shanghai blogger Jian Shuo Wang is using the help of e-mail from friends to disseminate SARS information on his blog. “Emails are always quicker than local newspapers,” he points out. As early as February 12, before the illness was even given a name, Jian Shuo Wang was relying on, and blogging about, reports from friends in Guangzhou about concern over the disease taking serious hold on the population there.

I love the idea of Weblog Central on MSNBC. It is the “gates to the world of personal news”. The best thing is that it gives chances for small sites to be listed on the famous news site. My friend R G runs his site of Tiger Cafe and was listed as Best Food Blog. He was also very happy about the link.

Face masks – I was scared, really scared

Want to know people really feel in a SARS infected areas? I can tell you. Before 11:38 AM today, I can still talk about SARS, the data of infected people and how serious the problem is with ease. At 12:38 AM, I saw the first person wearing mask on the street. At 12:40 AM, I saw the second.

I suddenly doubt the quality of the air – I felt shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. It is true – I mean physically. The world suddenly seems so dangerous – just like everyone is dangerous. Although I feel OK very soon, but I do remember the feeling of the shock at that time.

Feeling the danger

To realize the danger and to feel the danger are too different thing. When you realize the danger, you are not worried. What do you think if you know that in Guangzhou, the traffic accidents killed 1739 people in the city of Guangzhou in the year of 2002 alone? (source: pcauto.com [Chinese site])? You are not scared and the travel and business trip to Guangzhou will not be paused. This number is much larger than the number of SARS infected people in Guangzhou. But the world is just more concerned about SARS than traffic accident – it is not because SARS is more dangerous, it is because people can feel the danger.
