Comments on My Daocheng Pictures

Today, I happen to see Micah Sittig posted on his China, California, Books and mentioned my pictures to Daocheng. Really nice comment. Thanks Micah!

Wang Jianshuo reposted some pictures of his trip to Daocheng in response to a comment on another blog. This is the second time I’ve seen these, and in my estimation they are truly the most beautiful travel pictures I have every seen

The trip to Daocheng changed me a lot. It is one of the beautiful part of Tibet. The mass large area of Tibet may seems mysterious, but the area near Daocheng is really beautiful!

Best of Febuary 2003 Blog

20:58

This article summarizes my blog entries of Febuary 2003, so you can find information you want more easily.

Febuary is the shortest month of the year. There is 28 days in 2003, among which, 7~9 days are Chinese Spring Festival. There is only 10 blog entries in this month

In this month, there is a piece of breaking news – golarger spam. I described what is golarger spam and quoted Simo‘s complain email to fight back this spam. It is interesting that a lot of people find my page in the #1 position in Google result for golarger. So they think I am the one who send out spam to them. They complained and posted here and there.

Like golarger, Xupiter is another kind of annoying spam. I described about this and linked to articles to remove it in this entry.

Althought it is the holiday season, the people in Guangzhou and surrounding areas are not that lucky. Pneumonia-type virus outbreak in Guangzhou. It has been said the situation became worse several days later.

There is something interesting too. More website are linking to me; I found a good way to go from Pudong Airport to Suzhou. I went to Beijing for about four days. It was sunny there.

That’s all for my Febuary in 2003. Check here for more details.

Fixing and Changing on Wangjianshuo.com

Fixing

The PVGBBS has been out of order for about one month. Whenever I click on any of the post, it always report:

Untrapped Error:

./sources/display.pl does not return a value from E:\Customer\Wangjianshuo\…

This is an annoying error and I looked it up on Internet and didn’t find any suggestions. Actually, the error message is too broad and does not help.

Finally, after I backup all the files into my local disk, I suddenly noticed that display.pl has the size of 0 byte. How can it happen? I downloaded another copy of YABB Gold 1 SP 1.0 and replaced the problematic display.pl – everything works like a charm.

It turned out that during the change of web server, the staff from my ISP didn’t migrate my site completely. There are some posts and files lost during the migration, but the affect is minor.

Changing

The homepage of wangjianshuo.com is changed to the new style:

News from Wangjianshuo.com’s blog (this web site) appears on that static web site using VBScript.

If you are also using MovableType, just create a new index template named “News Feeding VBScript” and let it create page named news.vbs. Use the code below as the content of the template, save it and rebuild, your blog newsfeed is ready.

Here is the source code of the VBScript generating the headlines:

<script language=vbscript src="https://home.wangjianshuo.com/news.vbs"></script><

On Error Resume Next

Sub PrintNews()

strNewsHTML = ""

<MTEntries lastn="7">

strNewsHTML= strNewsHTML + "<a href=<$MTEntryLink$>#<$MTEntryID pad="1"$>><$MTEntryTitle$></a>

<span class=posted><$MTEntryDate format="%B %d"$></span><br />"

</MTEntries>

Document.Write strNewsHTML

End Sub

Call PrintNews

Adding the following line to the webpage (http://www.wangjianshuo.com/index.htm) and the headline is displayed automatically.

<script language=vbscript src="https://home.wangjianshuo.com/news.vbs"></script>

This is the redesigned homepage.

Alcatel OT715

It has been 7 days since I bought my new mobile Alcatel OT715.

Resources on OT715 are very rare on the Internet. Wow. How can this happy? David has been wondering about what Alcatel is. Well, Alcatel is not that famous as Motorola, Nokia or Siemens… It is a Franch company that runs very good business in China. I think it may also run good business in Russian since 1/2 of the content on Internet about Alcatel OT715 returned from Google are either in Chinese or in Ruassian.

I am curious to know how many people in the world are using the same mobile as me. But the number should not be large, which can be reflected from the results of Google search for Alcatel OT715 – 6K entries at the time when this page is created. How about Nokia 3650? There are 161K results.

There is an official website about this mobile – but the site is among the slowest company sites I have ever seen. I am very disspointed about the site since it only contains beautiful pictures but don’t have the user manual and function description that I need.

After long time seeking, I decide to share some of my experience. I have to say I love the mobile although I don’t like its web site. It is a pity for a good mobile without a good page — I mean a good page that can be find easily in Google.

BTW, at the time this page is created, my previous page on OT715 is at the 10th place in the returning result of Google for “Alcatel OT715

Background

Alcatel OT715 is launched in Hong Kong on July 15, 2002. It is available first in China and Hong Kong market, European market follows. At the time it is launched, it costs about 2500 RMB. At the time I bought it, its price drops to 1850 RMB in Shanghai.

Features

Here are the key features as listed in Alcatel’s offical web site for OT715. My comments are added under each feature.

Infrared interface & serial link

Well. This is a very good feature. I use it to

  • put the pictures of my house and girl friend into the handset, and show it as standby screen.

    shanghai-fanfan-on.OT715.png shanghai-fanfan.leaning-on.OT715.png

    and

This can be accomplished via Creation Studio that comes with the mobile. The Infrared port is very handy to get the image from my Acer TravelMate 360.

  • Transfer contact information to and from other mobile and laptop with Infrared Interface. I always think the connection between computer and mobile are too complicated. But the transfer of contact information of Alcatel OT715 is an exception. Here are the simple steps:
    • On the handset, click Tools -> Infrared.

The mobile will report “Infrared is activated”. Meanwhile, a small icon indicating Infrared will appear at the taskbar.

    • Put the mobile phone near the Infrared port of a laptop computer.

The computer and the mobile should connect with each other automatically.

OT715 should show “The infrared has been connected successfully.” and the laptop computer should show “Another computer is near by”, then change to “Wireless link with Alcatel OT715 at 115220 bps” computer-wireless.with.OT715.PNG.

    • Choose a contact person on OT715 and select Transfer from the menu.
    • Answer “Yes” when the Infrared manager on laptop computer ask you whether you want to receive the document.
    • The file will be saved on the laptop in the format of a VCard. (Typically it will appear on your desktop). You can open the VCard using notepad if you don’t have any VCard Management software like Outlook. Here is the content of a VCard.

      BEGIN:VCARD

      VERSION:2.1

      N;CHARSET=UTF-8:Jian Shuo Wang;

      TEL;WORK:02163352266P6656

      TEL;CELL:13916146826

      TEL;HOME:XXXXXXXXX

      END:VCARD

  • For the serial line, I don’t think it is useful since the software IntelliSync always crashes on Windows XP that I cannot complete a sync with my Outlook.

There should be more functions other than transfering VCard or Image. I will post for more functions after I discovered it.

Built-in GSM/GPRS (class 10) modem

What is this? I have to admit that I don’t learn new things as quick as I do 10 years ago. I have no idea about the GSM/GPRS modem, let along the term of “class 10”.

I noticed that when the mobile is connected with my laptop via Infrared Port, an additional modem called “Modem – Standard Modem over IR link (COM4)” appeared on my Windows XP laptop. I can create a Dial-Up connection using this modem, but whenever I dial, it will fail. The encouraging message is, when I dial-up using the connection, the mobile will dial out as I am using the dial-pad to dial and the mobile displays “Outgoing Call 8163” (8163 is the Internet access number in Shanghai). However, it prompted “Service not available” very soon.

I assume that it is because I don’t subscribed the Digital Data service from my NSP (network service provider). I plan to apply for this function and have a try later.

Vcard & Vcalendar exchange

I have covered this in “Irared Interface” section before. Thank God that the standard of VCard is reached so it can communicate with other mobiles and other applications.

PALM & Windows CE devices compatible

Not sure what this item means. I happen to have a Palm PDA. Let me give it a try to see if there is any possible connection between the two devices.

EMS release 4.0

I was told that I can send music with the message to my friends. It can also attach some 32×32 icons like these:

cat.png squirrel.png lion.png

However, this does not help me a lot since I don’t want to waste time to attach a piece of music before I am very sure the my friend also have EMS 4.0 functions.

Ring tones & animated icons messaging

Here are some of the pictures shipped with the mobile.

Download facilities

I am not very sure about what the download facilities means. It may be only available when WAP service is available. I didn’t pay for the WAP service yet. It seems that the download here refer to downloading from a computer instead of downloading from Internet.

Interactive games

The three games come with Alcatel OT715 LOOK interesting:

  • Killer Expo
  • Run Run Run
  • Botwar

But I have to say the games are too fancy to be put into this small screen — although Alcatel OT715 has the largest screen of a mobile phone, it is still too small to play games. I don’t play any of the games. Sorry for the hardworking programers who created them.

Two-player network game

I don’t know how to use this feature yet. The users’ manual are just like the help document of Microsoft products – professional, well formatted but does not help at all. My quesiton is, why a mobile phone designed for “the high-end market” has so many game feature? Do they really expect business man to play games? Or will they play a two-player network game with another business man?

Multi-field directory

Yeh! This is the killer feature of OT715. For each individual, there are fields like Name, Mobile phone, Work phone, Home phone, Email, Address, City, Fax. These features are so handy to store two or three numbers under a single contact. When I want to dial out, two or three options are shown and let me choose to dial to his/her mobile or phone at work or phone at home. This works great for me. When I was using SIEMENS 3508, I have to create two seperate entries: Mr. Lin (HOME) and Mr. Lin (MOBILE) for the same person. The nightmare is finally over.

Scheduler, To Do list

I may be a good feature but nothing is impossible before I can setup the IntelliSync work on my Windows XP. As I have stated, it always crashes when I try to sync.

PC & Over the Air synchro (SyncML)

This feature seems fantastic. But give me some time to make it work. I may ask the helpful hotline guy to find out the answer.

I read about SyncML Server from time to time on Internet. Can I setup my own SyncML Server on home.wangjianshuo.com? There are too many questions in my mind.

High resolution display

Look at the mobile. It looks so nice!

Up to 10 lines of text (100×150 pixels)

This feature is self-explainary. I don’t need a color-screen mobile which is exteremly popular nowaways. All I need is information, instead of colorful pictures. This design of OT715 just works for me.

4 gray scale quality

EL film with blue backlight color

Very nice features that makes the modem look cool. It is announced that this mobile is “Men Mobile”. Exactly.

Zoom function & landscape viewing

Where is the Zoom function? I cannot find it anywhere on the mobile.

WAP 1.2.1 (Openwave micro browser)

I am afraid I will use GPRS instead of WAP. WAP is expensive!

Updated March 19, 2003

After another 7 days of this entry, I found the WAP function of Alcatel OT715 very useful. I have subscribed to GPRS service and can browse all the WAP sites. Further more, I added WAP function to this blog. That means, I can check who left comment on my web site and the hit counter of the page in real time. If you also have a WAP-enabled mobile, just try to browse https://home.wangjianshuo.com/wap/. I do feel “Information At My Fingertips” now.

SATK Class 3 Release 99

What is the new term of SATK again? Even Google cannot answer this question. SATK Class 3 seems to be the place on Internet to mention this term. Will keep investigating this.

Updated March 19, 2003

I see. It is SIM Application Tool Kit. I remember the service provider once asked me to change to another SIM card for free. It will add a new item under my main menu — services. The application is burned into the SIM card and can be accessed by the mobile.

Location services enabled

Does it mean the mobile can tell me where I am? The altitude and longtitude? If it is the case, it will be super cool. But I don’t see any interface on the mobile yet.

M-Services compatible

I have to doubt the propose of this spec: why there are so many hard-to-understand terms in the spec? I have never heard of M-Services, do you?

With the help of this webpage, I guess the M-Services are something like downloading service with OpenWav’s WAP Browser. Does it mean I can download a wall paper via WAP and show it on my mobile? It seems good. I can put my pictures on my web site and download it using my phone.

Taxi for families from Pudong Airport

Question: How convinient it will be to hire a 7 to 10 passenger taxi from the airport. Will it take long to wait for one?

This question comes from Mr. Lim.

Well. Most taxies in Pudong airport are the standard taxi – for 4 passengers at most. There is no larger taxi in general. I suggest you to take two taxies, or book a taxi in advance.

I am not sure if this is conveinient for you. You can call +86-21-82222 for a Dazhong taxi (there is only 7 seat taxi at this line). Note: They may speak Chinese only.

Call +86-21-62758800 (Jin Jiang Taxi) or +86-21-62580000 (Qiang Sheng Taxi) for 10-person taxi reservation. It is the most convenient way to move around Shanghai for team activities and for families. The fee is exactly the same as traditional taxi plus 5 RMB (15 initial fee, including 3 km, 2 RMB per kilometer).

Daozhong, Jin Jiang and Qiang Sheng are the three best taxi companies in Shanghai.

Going to Asia

I noticed there is a sentence in Colleen’s Newtown:

Could take a while. Click here to see where I wish I could be right NOW, and intend to get (eventually).

It is nice that many people are enjoying the photos I took in Daocheng). It is a wonderful place indeeed – the scene, the trip, the creek — everything.

Look at the mountains! Look at the snow!!

Good Feedbacks for this Site

I am so impressed by the good words I received in the last two weeks. I am very happy to see these feedback and I’d like to thank you for your encouragement.

I didn’t confirm with each of you who sent the letter to me. I assume you should be OK as long as I don’t put your full name or email address. :-) Do let me know if you don’t like me to share it here. Thanks.

I was in Shanghai last month for my brother’s wedding. It is a very

beautilful city. It reminded me of Paris or New York. We had a wonderful

time.

Thank you for researching and posting the information about golarger and how

to stop them from getting through to my computer. I was very irritated to

get the unwelcome pop up messages from them. I appreciate the work you did

to stop them.

— Becky

I learned a lot from your web site: the nearby hotel, which taxi to take etc. The information I found on your web site will help me w/ my trip to Shanghai/Huangshan.

You did a great job! Thank you so much.

Dream-like Tibet

I have wrote some entries about Daocheng. The pictures show the Kham part of Tibet. There are a lot of more places in Tibet that is beautiful like those places in a dream. Here are some pictures I received from my friends.

My New Mobile – Alcatel OT715

After SIEMENS, MOTOROLA, NOKIA, SIEMENS, my fifth mobile is Alcatel OT715. I bought one today – I am very excited about it.

Mobile phones

I believe China, Korea and Japan are among the highest population of mobile holders. Take me as an example, I know persons around me all have mobile phones – my friends, my classmate, my colleagues, my friends’ friends – all have mobiles. It seems mobile numbers are just like Social Security ID number – everyone has one. Don’t get me wrong. I just talk about my life and people around me. Don’t assume anyone in China has a mobile – after all, I am living in one of the most modern city. If I can, I should also be something like middle class.

Alcatel OT715 is just designed for me

I am not a fan of mobiles. I just need a mobile that just works. I do have some friends who know every details of almost every model from various manufactures. Obviously I am not that kind of person.

However, this model made me exited when I first saw the introduction from a magzine dedicated to mobiles.

Guestbook

Hi, welcome to visit my website (blog site and/or personal site). Please leave your name and your comments using the comment box below. I am very intersted in hearing from you. Thanks.

Guest book moved

Before this, I have an guest book at Yahoo!Guestbook. It is full very soon.

Then I moved it to my personal BBS, but the system seems too complicated for my visitors so dramatically fewer people signed.

Now I decided to merge it into the blog comment system provided by MovableType. This provide two benefits:

1) There is only one system which make it easy to manage and backup.

2) The name of the author of the comment will be shown on the homepage of this site, so others can get aware of the new entry.

For article related comments, please continue to post it under the article. For comments related to the whole site or cannot find the right place to post, post it here. I will create new guestbook articles so this page don’t get too long with the time passing by.

In contesy of Simo, I quoted his comment here.

Beautiful fight back, SImo. I wonder what the “due disciplinary measures” are. I am looking to see if there is any further investigation of this issue. Please keep us updated. Thanks.

Easiest way – turn off Messenger service

The easist way to stop receiving this kind of message is to turn off Windows Messenger service. If you are running Windows XP, following these steps:

  • Click Start button on your toolbar.
  • Click Run…
  • Enter “Services.msc” (without quotation marks) and click OK.
  • Browse the list till you find “Messenger” in Name column
  • Right click and click “Stop” on the pop up menu. That is not all. If you don’t want the service to start the next time you start your computer, continue with the following steps:
  • Double click it. The Messenger Properties (Local Computer) dialog box comes out.
  • Choose “Disable” in “Startup type” drop down box.
  • Click OK.

Golarger.com – NET SEND Spamer and Comment Spammer

When I opened my web server log today, I was surprised that many visitors are visiting my site via Yahoo! or Google just to find out who is golarger or golarger.com. (Yes! I intensionally didn’t hyperlink this URL since I don’t want to contribute more traffic to this spammer’s web site).

Why are people interested in golarger

It is obvious the 221 hits for searching the exactly the same term golarger is not just by chance that people happen to think about this term together. When the sudden increase of a word in my web log, I know something special happened. This is the case of golarger.com.

The truth is, golarger.com sent out Windows Messenger spam to a lot of people, asking them to visit their web site. I don’t know how many yet.

According to Work of Fiction, Brad Nugget received the popup box like this:

Message from GOLARGER on 2/15/2003 11:55:17 PM

Brad, sorry that I cannot link to the orginal blog entry on the site since the archive link on this site does not work when I visited

Someone even posted the Network Monitor result of the analysis here.

Bad. Very bad!

As always, I hate NET SEND SPAM of any kind. If you are interested, please see my previous blog entries (the pages enjoy the highest hit rate of my whole blog site) on NET SEND SPAM.

Why searching for golarger leads to my page?

I was asking the same question then. This is another bad thing golarger did. Under my page of Stoping Net Send Spam, James left a comment like this:

I mean, honestly… www.golarger.com should be the target of the next “Code Red”…

Posted by: James on February 14, 2003 02:25 AM

I did notice this entry but didn’t pay much attention to this one. Now, the discussion on golarger.com is not popular on Internet, my page became one of the only 4 pages on Internet which contains golarge at the time this entry is created.

James, the bloggerr comment spammer

Again, beside being a “NET SEND SPAMMER”, the lovely James has another title, blogger comment spammer – who sends their advertisement to blogger’s comment system. I used the term from this article.

The battle against Net Send Spam (NSS) just begins

I thought everyone is hating spam, but Mr/Miss/Mrs Marketer told me the opposite thing. He commented in ths comment entry that

So, what do you do when you go to your mail-box outside of your home? Do you beat up the postman when he delivers a piece of junk mail or do you go to court because you received the latest sales flyer from Radio Shack or maybe you call ABC and NBC when your favorite movie is on TV and here comes a commercial. I think not! This whole Spam Issue makes me sick and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Let people advetise…there is nothing wrong with it…it is how you got your website on one of the top search engine pages….OH!, Maybe you forgot that!!!…

I also replied the entry stating

However, net send advertisement directly popup on MY screen no matter what I am doing. It is just like someone jumping into my room and paint their advertisement on MY wall. I don’t care if he/she do it on his wall or on his friends’ wall – as long their friend is OK for that. But I am angry if I see these kind of popups….

Hot debate on net send spam

Many other people joined the debate on the topic of Net Send Spam under my page on Net Send Spam – Yet Another Type of Spam. It is very interesting to see how people think of the same thing diffenetly.

Marketer:

I hope that I was able to maybe shed some light on this subject and enable you to look through the eyes of an Online Marketer who earns just over $3,000 per month Online. This is my small income to support six children of which three are being adopted by my beautiful wife and myself….

Const:

In a word, i think such spamming in the cyber world is not ethical, although one might make a large amount of money from it….

Antimarketer:

Yeah, now this ass marketer is telling us that if he has 3 adopted children and 3 of his own, he has the right to spam. so now if i go an adopt 6 kids, and have six of my own, i guess i can go and kill too, because i will be making a meanie 3000 dollars to feed my kids. what an asshole this guy is, and how stupid can he become ?? …

Marketer

I am asking this board to please use another term

other than SPAM when addressing this form of advertising.

The word SPAM is incorrect, go and see for yourself. Spam relates ONLY to EMAIL…period!…

Reader:

Well, first I have to say that I agree somewhat with marketer.

You pay for cable or satellite to see your movies on tv, then they send you their advertisements that they paid for.

It’s pretty much the same with the internet. You paid for access, and someone else is paying to advertise where you can see it….

iX:

Some boastingly thought this sort of SPAM should continue. I don’t think so. There are certain types of Junk mail it is illegal to send, there are some forms of advertising on the Television that is illegal (subliminal), even though everyone has a TV and is capable to receive subliminal messages, it has been deemed illegal. Net Send messages take processing cycles and comsume memory and network bandwidth, which means I have fewer resources to perform more effective functions. Ditto to Web Popups and Popbacks. These things consume resources and are unsolicited advertising….

Graeme:

In response to the pro spam ad post by Marketer, the patronising attitude of telling me to click “that little x” is not appreciated. Having to close the pop up is not the problem here, it’s the intrusive nature of the advertising. What right does anyone have to force a box with their useless little message onto your screen. Not only is it annoying, but it can potentialy destroy someones work….

anon:

Opt-in email advertising is not only ethical but also appropriate for small business owners in today’s internet society.

I could go on for a while – but I think that my point has been made – IF YOU DON’T WANT TO RECEIVE THE MESSAGES – THEN TURN THE OPTION OFF….

SpamBlows:

We don’t like it. If you love spam so much give us all your ip address, and we’ll spam the hell out of you, and we’ll do it using a dynamic IP…how do you like them apples?…

Ryan:

my friends and i have used net send for years at the university we attend. i was shocked to find out that people have began using such a useful tool as a means of mass advertising. i would like to point out to the readers out there that these people CLAIM to pay thousands, and if they are foolish enough they actually may, but in fact anyone with an extra 15 minutes can send these spam messages to every ip in the world for free….

ICBC Card

I have a very interesting card – the ICBC credit card. It can only withdraw cash from ATM machine outside P.R.China but not within the country. It is a card issued by Industry and Commercial bank of China! How strange it is.

It is also the first card I don’t need password in China to purchase or to withdraw money. I don’t need a citizen ID card either.

Eyes on Guangzhou

It is reported that the Outbreak of Atypical Pneumonia is under control. It is good news. However, from the individuals ofr the city, the anxiousity don’t seems be to controlled yet.

I have a lot of friends and classmates in Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. I am concerned about their situation and worried about them. So I keep a close eye on our class BBS to see how well they are doing. But I feel even anxious when reading the pieces of posts. I have to say, most of the news are not confirmed – or I have to say, “officially” confirmed yet, but it is definitely confirmed people in Guangzhou are discussing this.

Feb 13 – “Citizens in Shenzhen rush to stores to buy salt and rice for stock. A very small bag of salt soars to 10 RMB. It is unbelievalbe!”

Feb 13 – “I don’t see people around me to stock rice and salt, bu I read it in newspaper”
