Back to Blog of My Own

Get Back to My Own Life.

I get a little bit tired of the recent “discussion” on my blog. I just found the effort to setup a communication bridge is not that easy. I am not comfortable some of the comments. If people involved in discussion are not willing to pay even little effort to learn, it does not make too much sense to comment.

It is not easy to open one’s heart to pay little effort to understand another country, for people both inside or outside China. It sometimes requires more than effort. It requires skills. To be honest, I feel complain and finger-pointing with only the limited information from mess media leads the discussion to nowhere. I did ignore some comments. Sorry for that. I have to.

OK. Let me take a moment and relax, and bring the blog to be my own one. I am not blogging for anyone. Just leave me alone… :-)

My Air Con

After the summer came, Wendy complained every day or two about the malfunction of our A/C in the bedroom. It simply cannot cool down the room. The HITACHI support staff also complained the new technology used in this model does not work as expected. I believe the big window of the room may also be the reason of the condition. The smaller, cheaper, and simpler LG A/C in my reading room works much better. It is just of half price. Sometimes cheaper stuff works better.

Windows Vista

Wendy is using Windows Vista on her new laptop already. On Vista, she also installed Office 2007. The new UI is cool, but I was surprised by the memory usage and the hard disk usage of the new operating system. Henry said: “When there is breakthrough in hardware (CPU, Memeory, Equipments), the demand for software increases; when the development of hardware slows down, Internet based application becomes popular.”

BTW, recently I just realized Wendy’s team is supporting the major Windows product like Windows XP, Windows 2003, and Windows Vista for Microsoft Asia premier customers. They even support Groove! Groove is the software enabling people to collaborate with each other. The company was started by Lotus Notes’ creator, and bought by Microsoft. It is an important assignment, isn’t it? Wendy and I both have our own worlds, with different pressure, and different metrics we oversee every single day. Recently, I just realized I know her business as little as she knows mine. Should we know more about each other’s business? I think the answer would better be “no”. :-)

Different People Using Same Name

Due to the simplicity of blog comment, people are not required to enter user name or password to post on blog. This create a problem, that someone can easily use the other people’s name to post a comment, pretending to be the person he/she is actually not. More often, people just share the same name. It is more common when people just use their first time.

This is a trick to tell whether the two comments under the same name really belong to the same person.

Click the Icon Besides the Name

You may be aware that there is a small icon on the right of every name of the comment. This page shows all the comments made under this name.

Pay Attention to the Color

If you look carefully enough, you will see a short bar with a color on the left side of the name. Let me tell you the meaning of the color.

We have made the arrangement that people with the same email address will be shown with same color, and people with different emails have different color.

Here is one example:

screen-mark-color.name.bmp

It seems there are many people with name of Mark. As you can tell from this screenshot, all the Mark in this screen used different email addresses.

Email Addresses are Private

I assume email addresses are private information. I never share your email addresses with anybody else. The color is calculated by do a hash on the email address. Even the smallest change, like a space, or upper/lower case will change the color dramatically.

Be Cautious

Even with this mechanism in place, do not take it for granted that people posting with different email addresses are different persons. Someone may post under different email, or more easily, post under different names to express different opinions. Or people with the same email address is the same person. Someone else may know your email and post on behalf of you.

A false sense of certainty is worse than no such sense at all. So please take the assistant information just as reference, and don’t rely on it.

So, just be cautious. I am amazed how peaceful the blog has been in the last three and half years, under the anonymous nature of the blog comment. It is effort of the community member of this blog. I hope the peace continues.

Hot Articles in 2002 to 2005

This is a list of my previous entries in the year 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 that receives more than 10 comments. It is tiring to read the list one by one – I was not able to read through the year of 2002 myself. It is only the hottest entry with many participation (11 or more comments), just part of the archive. What an effort to create then one by one. :-D It is the demonstration of how much we can achieve with daily accumulation – 15 minutes a day means a lot after three years.

Three Years of Blogging

This is the first day of the forth year of my blogging.

After three years (or 1095 days) of blogging, I thought this may be a bigger event for my life, but I didn’t feel it that way when this day come. This is a normal Sunday for me – Typhoon hits Shanghai again, and it starts to rain. The subtitle of Shanghai Oriental TV reminds people to stay in home and check windows and doors. Four year ago, on the same day, 9-11 event happened in New York (BTW, the most admirable exhibition I ever heard of is Here is New York). Maybe the rain brings more blue mood for me and an three year anniversary reminds me to look back to see what happened in the days before.

I’d like to invite everyone to visit my Archive Page. On this page, you will see a list of 1058 articles of the previous three years. All those marked with Bold font are hot topics with more than 10 comments. You can also click here to load the list into the search pane, making it easier to navigate through articles (IE only).

In the three years, my topics shifted a lot. From daily Shanghai life, to my travel record and to big news happening in Shanghai. Some times I intentionally ignore some hot news, and people will argue on that – why did you keep silient on this? It is the expectation.

Recently, the topic shifted a little bit from the city of Shanghai to culture and Internet, due to the shift of my own focus. I also started the Chinese version of my blog, and kept it in a pace of one article every week (It is just impossible for any one with a full time job to post two entries, one in Chinese and one in English every day).

Again, every time I review what we have accumulated on this blog, I want to thank people who commented on this blog. On English blog, 1058 entries received 111924 comments. The ratio of comment to entry is 11.27. On Chinese blog, 87 entries received 1259 comments, making the ratio to be 14.47…

I hope in the forth year, I can still be able to keep my promise from day 1 – to report “Events (in Shanghai) that affect my life (and others’)” in a personalized way.

Celebrating 1000 Days of Blogging

Let me celebrate 1000 days of blogging.

screen-1000days-blogging.PNG

BTW, this is the 1000th blog entry since my first post in 2002. Thanks everyone’s input. I’d like to thank all the following people who are also part of Wangjianshuo’s Blog. The numbers behind their names are the number of comments they made on this blog since day 1.

996 Day of Blogging

What a coincidence! This is the 996th entry of my blog. It is also my 996th day of blogging. Four days later, I will celebrate the 1000th day of blogging – especially for the continuous blogging. There are some OOBs during the 996 days, but for majority of the time, I kept writing one article per day. That was not easy. It is something that I kept doing consistently other than sleep and eat… I am looking forward to celebrate my 1000th article soon.

My Blog Won’t Go Commercial

I am not surprised if people ask me about the question: “Why did you turn your blog into a commercial site? I am sure you can make a lot if you sell it”. Well. I believe that. But the problem is, I won’t sell it. :-) With 10,000 unique visitors everyday and 1 million page views, I am happy that this blog covers most of the expats to Shanghai (correct me if I am too confident here). Lots of my foreign friends tell me that they know my blog before they come to Shanghai. Typically, people get started with a search on Shanghai in Google. Andrea told me that all her girl friends know the site, which really flattered me. Of cause, I am very happy to know that.

It is natural that someone proposed to me to turn the site into commercial websites or even sell it. It is some option that I won’t consider. Why? It is part of my life. I enjoy helping and sharing. I enjoy the emails I got everyday with “thank you” as the first sentence, and I enjoy to have my tea house and invite wise people to come and discuss about many topics from different perspectives. It is my baby and I won’t share it with others. I have give up the option to get rich via this blog. Above all, the Google Adsense on this site treated me well already. The worst thing I can do is to get money from someone, anyone I can imagine, and I lose the passion to stay late and write. I may mention something in a dishonest way just because I get money from it. 1% presence of such dishonest content ruins my confident to write in the days to come and may ruin my readership. Now, I also recommendate business on my site – just like where to go and where to get hosting. It is based on my experience. All the information is not always correct – sometime I got fooled and cheated, but I won’t cheat. I thanked my reader who offered to donate for my work. I appreciate it. But I want to respectfully reject it. Now the small money I collect from Adsense program pays my hosting fee and I don’t think donation can me a millionaire. If it does, well, let me think again. :-) If you want to donate, I accept gifts – a post card with international stamp is a good choice, and a link to this site is another good one. I accept that. Isn’t it fun to have a famous blog than having a lot of money? Money won’t make people happy. Achievements do.

The backlog of my emails is still not cleared out. If you wrote to me in the last week, chances are, you will NOT get a response. Send again if you do care a response. Sorry for that, but my bandwidth is limited

What’s Wangjianshuo’s Blog

Started in September 2002, the only author, Jian Shuo Wang, with the contribution of thousands of commenters, kept writing one article everyday. In the previous 852 days, 868 articles were published. Seven thousands of high quality comments formed interesting and in-depth discussions on Shanghai, China and the world. Topics like Maglev, Pudong airport, raising of house price, cars in Shanghai, and normal Shanghainese’s life were addressed in this blog.

No wonder why it was selected as Top 10 Best Blogs in China in 2003 and concluded as Most Impressive Blogs in 2004. It was mentioned by famous media from New York Times, to MSNBC, from BusinessWeek to Telegraph, from Salon.com to China Radio International, from That’s Shanghai to MarketPlace and Pacific Time…

The site enjoys 1 million page views per month and 160,000 unique visitors every single month. Jian Shuo Wang is trying his best to keep the blog as personal as possible and record the development of the city in his own point-of-view.

Negative Comments for this Blog

Some people don’t like this blog. Some hate it. Here are their reasons.

Why a Chinese uses English to Blog?

It is common comment. Someone said something really bad about this blog, because it is in English. Many people take France as a model of anti-English countries. I have to accept this. It is bitter sometimes. Well. Let me get back to the question, why I choosed to use English in this blog?

It was just for fun at the very begining. When I started, who knows what the site would be look like. Just as the URL of this site, I used http://home.wangjianshuo.com for simple reason – the computer was at my home. After that, I found the gap of communication and the hopeless visitors in Shanghai or planning to visit Shanghai. So I continued. It does not mean I don’t love my country or to show off – as some commented.

Bad Shanghaiese?

Some people just feel someone is bad because they are Shanghainese. This became popular, as I discussed at the Mercy! Tolerance section of Nice Meetup with Hailey and Roddy. I don’t want to comment on this. It does not make any sense.

As earthmilk said, why people keep giving comments and suggestions to other people’s life.

Last Post in Year II

This is the last blog of Wangjianshuo’s Blog in the Year II. Well. Relax, relax. This is not the last post – I know some of my frequent readers are alarmed to see the title, as Carroll did when she read my article To Continue or Not? Confusing in China Blogsphere. I am not abandon this blog. The news I am going to deliver is, I am stepping to the third year of Wangjianshuo’s Blog from tomorrow.

Here are some experienced I got in the last 731 days.

  1. Write personally.
  2. Start your own domain early.
  3. MovableType is a good blogging tool for serious bloggers.
  4. Link is a gift to others.
  5. Set an interval of posting (if you cannot post once everyday as I did) and stick to it.
  6. Forecast OOB (Out Of Blogging) whenever possible.
  7. Content is more important than appearance. Don’t hurt the content by adding disturbing element.
  8. Always include souce when quote and give credit to others is the best way to build your own credit.
  9. Don’t like quoted content domainate your blogs.
  10. Write with great details.
  11. Blog is not something new to show off.
  12. Turn on Google AdSense if your readers think it is acceptable. This is to support you to get your own domain instead of blah-blah.blogspot.com or blogcn.com..
  13. Start with a topic and write around it.

See How Many Articles I Wrote

Do you have an idea of how many is 722 articles? I had no idea before I print out the screen shot of the archives page on this site. Every blue line in the picture below that is too small to read represents an article.

screen-wangjianshuo-archive.jpg

Screen shot of Wangjianshuo’s Blog Archive page.

That is a lot! That is the accumulation of small effort everyday (of two years).

P.S. The screen shot was captured by HyperSnap. I tried the 15 day evaluation edition. It works great.

I Started the Blog to Post Resume

Wendy, XGAO and I went to Eric‘s home to enjoy the beefsteak Eric cooked by himself. It was one of the best steaks I had so far, better than the Dou Niu Shi’s. :-D Nice cooker.

After that, sitting on his nice wood-floor, we discussed about topics on career. We talked about why I started the blog. I said: “Well. I just want to build a website, so I can post my resume one day.”

I was kidding. But it was one of the reasons. Back in Jun of 2002, my friend Wu Hao told me a story about the monk and the well. It was about two monks living in the same mountain. Both of the two monks go to river far away to get water. One year later, one monk did have to go to the river while the other had to go. The reason is, the smarter monk used the year to dig a well by himself everyday, while the other one did nothing. It reveals the importance of accumulation.

I thought to write something everyday may be a good idea. Then I heard the concept of blog and I started. Maybe one day, even I leave Microsoft, the company brings me much honor and opportunity, I am no longer an employee of a famous company, I am still the writer or a famous blog. I won’t start from scratch. As the simplest example, now, if I post my resume on my blog – a site with many readers, I may have more chances than others. I learnt from private emails that some readers are executives of big companies.

It is just one example of the benefit of building influencial power on the Internet. It is the personal branding, in topku word, or the personal portal, in owen‘s word. The influencial power cannot be built in just one day but it last longer than what you archived at work. I am happy to see the site has become a media to some extend. It has the influencial power already.

Abandon of One Entry Per Day Rule

When I wrote my first entry in 2002 (that was long time ago), I have decided to create one and only one entry everyday. It was to resist my attempt to write more entries per day at the very beginning. I know if I do that, I will lose the passion of writing very soon and the blog won’t last long. The history repeated itself for many times on me. It is called Hu Tou She Wei (虎头蛇尾). It is to describe something with an ambitious start as the head of a tiger but end up with nothing as the tail of a snake.

Time proofed the rule is quite helpful. The rule helped to balance the pace of the blogging. If there are two or more interesting topics, I will not write it in one day and may keep it on the list. If some day I don’t have any topic, I will take a look of the list and choose one to write.

Now, after 519 days of blogging, I am quite sure that I will not abandon blogging easily since it is a habit. It is the homework I have to do everyday before I go to bed. The rule has become an impediment to create a timely update. Sometimes, I have to put several irrelevant topics under the same title (the same entry) if I do have to write about it.

So I decided to carefully abandon the rule I created for myself. From now on, I may post more than on entry per day, but don’t expect it.

My topics will still cover the following aspect:

Shanghai – the amazing city.

Geek Happiness – I enjoy the cool (but sometimes less useful) things I can create with the latest technology.

Daily Life – what the life of a normal person in this big city is.

Thanks for listening.

Expressing with Icons

I laughed out loud when I see the statement on Run’s website:

As to celebrate one month opening of Run2me website and thank those who supported the site, I issue a series of 5 website logos with high value of collection.

It is a good idea to put the name of the website and the picture of the owner together to create the name card of a website. Interesting idea, isn’t it? I mean if this does not lead to personality cult in the long run. :-)

MSN Mesenger Icons

The new MSN Messenger Icon function of MSN 6.0 or higher is a great feature. Alex (website not functioning now) has a bunch of interesting icons. He just sent me a funny one this morning:

You can also import the three icons (19×19 pixel in size) into your MSN Messenger (Click the emotion icon (the smiley face) and click “My custom emotions…” when you chat with some body. Then click Add to add these three icons to your MSN one by one. Be sure to assign a short cut to each of them. I am using //c1, //c2 and //c3. Thanks Alex for sharing.

One Year Anniversary for This Site

Today is the one year anniversary for Wangjianshuo’s Blog. The website was setup on Sept 11, 2002, which is exactly one year ago.

The Begining

At that time, I was inspired by a blog RussianLegs.com on Sept 3, 2003, I am thinking about setting up my own blog.

So on Sept 11, 2003 (just coincident to the one year anniversary of Sept 11 event), I setup MovableType on the desktop computer in my reading room (the computer has been selt out at 2500 RMB later), and wrote my first blog entry MovableType Successfully Installed on Windows XP. It turned out to one of the most valuable entry on the whole website. I am happy that this entry helped a lot of bloggers to start MovableType on Windows based platform.

The Effort

From that day, I started to write daily on this blog. This is what Geo from Russianlegs.com told me when I asked how much time he used to maintain his blog: “Everyday, I spent 15 minutes to write the blog and 15 minutes to edit it”.

I followed the rule but some time I spent more than 1 hour on a long article and sometimes only take 5 minutes to note down what is happening.

The Blog

Now one year has past, here is the statistic for the blog (as you can see on the right side of my home page)

Created: Sept 11, 2002

Entries: 316

Categories: 7

Page views/day: ~ 4K

Location: Shanghai, China

Author: Jian Shuo Wang

Update Frequency: daily

It seems I am doing pretty well in the last year that I created 316 entries in the 365 days, making write rate of 87%. This certain include the long week in Daocheng when there is no mobile signal, no electricity and let alone network. The second long absence in blogging is in February, when I was on busy business trip to Beijing. Besides that, I believe I ALMOS kept this blog updated everyday. Wow. What an accomplishment, I didn’t think about that I can keep doing something continuous for one year or longer. I typically would give up half way or earlier.

The Reason

The reasons I kept the hard work (sometimes) are the feedbacks and comments on this blog. It is such an interesting place that people share the same interest gather and interactive with other. I got 2387 comments under 316 posts, making the average comment/post rate 7.55. That is impressive number, I believe. From the comments, I see people are happy either because I provided some valuable information about topics like Shanghai, SARS, Pudong Airport, OT715 or Windows Media web cam, or because I shared my personal life and experience like going to Daocheng, learn to drive, even to buy a mountain. Actually, I was really flattered by the good words.

The Popularity

In the previous year, the site becomes a little bit famous among search engines and media. My Google PageRank reached PR5 and become the target for some common term, like Pu Dong Airport. Meanwhile, it was featured on some local magazines like Shanghai Magazine. Thus the highest hit rate reached to 5K some time.

The Friends

I also treasure the relationship I built within the blogging world. I have a lot of friends who monitors and reference to my site consistently but I never linked back. It is because they are all in Chinese and from my site log, majority of my readers cannot read Chinese. I felt bad not doing that. These sites are: Chinese Tea (by Christina), IsaacMao.com (by Isaac Mao), Joycode (by Joy Wang), Tiger Cafe (by Raymond) and lots of others sites.

I’d like to celebrate the one year anniversary and share the happiness with you. I’d like to thank Wendy for her support. Click here for a complete list of the 316 articles.

Best of Febuary 2003 Blog

20:58

This article summarizes my blog entries of Febuary 2003, so you can find information you want more easily.

Febuary is the shortest month of the year. There is 28 days in 2003, among which, 7~9 days are Chinese Spring Festival. There is only 10 blog entries in this month

In this month, there is a piece of breaking news – golarger spam. I described what is golarger spam and quoted Simo‘s complain email to fight back this spam. It is interesting that a lot of people find my page in the #1 position in Google result for golarger. So they think I am the one who send out spam to them. They complained and posted here and there.

Like golarger, Xupiter is another kind of annoying spam. I described about this and linked to articles to remove it in this entry.

Althought it is the holiday season, the people in Guangzhou and surrounding areas are not that lucky. Pneumonia-type virus outbreak in Guangzhou. It has been said the situation became worse several days later.

There is something interesting too. More website are linking to me; I found a good way to go from Pudong Airport to Suzhou. I went to Beijing for about four days. It was sunny there.

That’s all for my Febuary in 2003. Check here for more details.

Blogger in China

9:21

Blogging is very interesting. The trigger of my blog was the MSN chat invitation sent by Geo, from Russianlegs.com. He asked me about the ban of Google around Sept 3, 2002. “It is interested.” I thought when he “interviewed” me about my oppion for this event. One hour later, I found my comments appeared at the homepage of russianlegs.com.

I have to say, I was really impressed by the speed of this kind of publishing. From the links provided in the home page, I read more about blogger, from many other blogger’s page, including Anders’s. After that, I began to write my first blog on Sept 11, 2002.

Actually, I am not very keen about the idea of blogging. It is a simple idea and not a great idea. But the way to write down something and publish it is interesting. I was doing so in my previous web site under news section, but the publishing tool is FrontPage and I wasn’t able to publish once every 10 days, instead of daily.

After keeping my promise to write everyday for about a quarter, I begin to look back to see the spread of blogging in China. Isaac Mao from cnblog.org has done a great job in categorizing and link to all blogger site in China. I don’t have exact number, but the list should contain about 100 – 300 blogging websites. Most of them are hosted by blogger.com.

Yesterday, on the marriage ceremony of one of my best friends, I was informed that blogger.com was blocked in China too. This is interesting. Actually, this is not a breaking news – it is inevitable.

Google is the place where information gathers. Blogger is the place for minds to gather. I believe they are something similiar.

Hopefully, the blogger will keep rolling.

Isaac’s Blog Speech

Hao told me that Isaac will deliver a Blog speech on Nov 15, 2002 in Shanghai. It is interesting and I have planned to meet him there.

Isaac is very active in online education and any new tech. He owns www.isaacmao.com and cnblog.org. The later has become very popular in bloggers in China. I heard of him via my friend Yizhong at 4 years ago as the CEO of Tangram Co. Later, I found his articles on media and it seems a lot of my friends know him. :-) I am going to meet him for the first time after knowing his name for 4 years.

Regarding the topic, I am not completely sure what he will be talking about. I am writing my own blog, but I don’t think blog is something that innovative. I doubt it will bring revolution to the web, as some media said.

Actually, it really depends. Just as Email is not revolutionary in itself, but the adoption created a new era of application. Browser itself is simple, but it is another killer application. Blog itself is a simple idea, but the speed it dumps the thoughts will eventurally form a new era of information. Who knows.
