Shall I Cancel my Trip to Shanghai?

Concerning the recent outbreak of SARS in Asia, especially in Hong Kong and Guangdong Province of China, WHO has issued warning to travelers against going to China. I saw the questions like this in the message boards of this site: “I have booked my tickets to Shanghai in this May. Shall I cancel my trip to Shanghai? Do you have any advice?”

To cancel or not to cancel, it is a question

Well. It is not an easy question to answer. If you ask about my advice, I will tell you two facts about Shanghai. The first is, you won’t feel the fear in Shanghai now. The life is going on and shops still opens. Schools are not closed and seldom can you see people wearing facial masks. It is a city of 16 million people. The official one case of SARS is relatively a smaller number (although I do think there are some cases not counted in the official report). So you don’t have to worry about going to Shanghai. The second fact is, like traveling to any area of the world now, the SARS is there and you have the risk to get infected when you set your foot to a SARS infected area. The risks of SARS, I believe, are not very high – at least not higher than other infectious disease.

My personal suggestion: Go ahead to Shanghai

I am living in this city. Millions of foreigners are also living in this city (3% of the population). It is not the worst of time to come to this city. The only factor to consider is the concerns of the people around you in your country about your trip after your return – people in your neighborhood may think you are dangerous – actually you are not if you don’t see the symptoms on you.

Shanghai is still beautiful and nice – like many people have experienced. There are certainly some risks there – this is for sure. But I don’t think it has to prevent you from coming this city.

When I talked with my friends in Shanghai today asking their suggestions for whether a foreigner should come to Shanghai or cancel the trip. Their answer is positive. They suggest to come but do some precautions – don’t go to public places and stay away from any one who coughs.

Public oppinions from CNN is negitive about the travel

Just checked CNN’s quick vote on the topic.

Would the warning from the World Health Organization make you change your travel plans to Hong Kong or China?

92% choosed YES

8% choosed NO

It is reasonable.

If you ask me “Will you cancel your trip to Iraq?” (if I did planned the trip), my answer is definitely NO, because of the war. But the fact is, not all areas of Iraq is affected by the war. There are some villages that are not important that either Iraqi or U.S. army will pay attention to. They are relatively safe – Shall I say that?

So before you make decision, just consider China is large, much larger than any other south Asia country. The outbreak of one province or city, as shown on TV or website, may not neccessarily be regarded as the situation of the entire country.

Negitive reasons for not to go

Meanwhile, please get aware of the following factors when you come to Shanghai.

1) The official information may not be the actual number. This can be seen via the conflicts of numbers. So do keep alerted no matter what the public is saying.

2) The SARS is highly infectious. The situation now is OK, but who knows about tomorrow. A large scale breakout troughout the city or country is still possible. At that time, it may not be easy to get back to where you come. The flights may be either cancelled or policy (of China or your country) prohibit you from going back if the situation become worse.

The decision is yours.

To my readers,

No matter you cancel or continue your trip, may God be with you and may you be safe and happy.

I hope that you can get through this tough situation and don’t need these hospitals.

Panic Under Control. SARS May Not

On contrast with the no any news in March, April is the month the term of “Atypical Pneumonia” has been put the headlines of all major news papers (online and traditional)

The change started when the Minister of Health hosted the media conference at the begining of April. Before that event, no matter what media it is, you just cannot find anything about the already hot term SARS or “atypical pneumonia”, just as no body in the media industry has even heard of them. The media conference broken the silence. The media conference was played again and again in CCTV – at least I have watched for twice. The headline of almost all media changed to “SARS under control” the next day.

The Panic is “under control”. But how about SARS

If you watch TV or pick up newspaper in Shanghai now, just be sure that you can watch or read news about SARS. It is the hot term in media now. BUT, all stating the situation is under control. “there is NO sars in Shanghai” or “There is only one case in Shanghai”. People are very happy to see the news. For those who has Internet access are still aware of the danger. But how about those who use TV and newspaper as the only source of information? Will they really relax and abandon all precautions? What if there are any infection chains that were not discovered in this big city?

Detailed information gave me more confidence

I have to say Shanghai is doing a great job so far in the improving information disclosure. The SARS related news has taken about 1/6 of the time of evening news on Shanghai TV and Orient TV. It is reported that 4 hosipitals have been identified as the special treatment hospital for SARS in Shanghai, among them, one are specially idenfied for foreigners. The news program has shown the video of these hospitals and the doctors there said that although no SARS cases were found, they are completely ready for the coming SARS patients if there is any in Shanghai.

Taxi and metro tickets disinfectant

The TV also shows the scene that all Dazhong taxis were disinfected. The metro tickets are also been disinfected one by one by the metro staff. It seems very good and the life in Shanghai should be safer – at least people are taking actions.

The campaigns of SARS awareness are also going on. I saw the black board of SARS prevention instructions have been laid in lots of residental areas. The preventional measures were also been posted in the elevator of my apartment. As soon as people are aware of this and take actions, the SARS is not that dangerous.

SARS: Culture Shock?

I read about Anna’s comments about her concerns on SARS. Mainlander followed up.

SHANGHAI KNIGHT: ok… let me get this straight… i may get SARS from someone who doesn’t show any symptoms because he is still in the incubation period?

WEI SONG: i live in xiamen and let me tell you that no one knows for sure if there have been SARS infected people here. we’ve heard of 2 university students dying but nothing official has been reported. our professors keep telling us that we shouldn’t panic but because the media has been so “hush-hush” about it we have become more paranoid. the locals are still unaware of the real danger of this virus. everyone still spits everywhere and everyone still coughs and sneezes without trying to cover thier mouths. it’s really difficult for me because i have a little baby and yet i have to realize that this is just how it is. i’m still waiting for “OFFICIAL NEWS”. till then i don’t have a choice but to live in fear. as soon as i’m done with my business here, i’m flying out of here and never coming back. unfortunately, many foreigners also feel the way i feel which is bad for China.

final thought: how could there be no SARS in Xiamen? We’re close to HongKong and the GuanDong Province.

Posted by: anna on April 8, 2003 05:00 PM

oh… i forgot to mention something…

2 months ago my baby developed some kind of gastroenteritis. at that time i was unaware that there was this SARS outbreak. I took my baby to Xiamen’s #1 hospital and the Doctor on duty gave him RIBAVIRIN. At that time I was puzzled as to why they would give antibiotics used for Respiratory problems to my child who had gastroenteritis. Just this morning i realized… maybe they thought it was sars. Maybe it was SARS. If so… they didn’t tell me anything. they just gave my baby the medication via drip then asked us to go home. My baby is now ok but what if he didn’t get well. what if something happened to him… who would i balme? shouldn’t they be more transparent to the patients? i get goose bumps everytime i think about what happened.

Posted by: anna on April 8, 2003 05:07 PM

Anna: I am not a doctor but I know Ribavirin may be used for a wide variety of virus-related deseases. Prescription of ribavirin did not necessarily mean your boy was ill with SARS, or the doctor intentionally held back the facts. However, it is strongly recommended you should consult with your doctor at home before using any drugs prescribed by a Chinese doctor, esp for your boy. In addition, note that injection is Chinese doctors’ favorite but has proved to be extremely dangerous here in China as you might get hepatitis or HIV in this way, even if you use disposable syringes in a seemingly good hospital. See a doctor from your home country or make an IDD call to your own doctor, you will find out the difference.

Text in contesy for Anna and Mainlander. I assume by posting to the board, you granted me the right to quote your comment here. Let me know if you’d like to remove it from this article.

Well. First of all, I’d like to thank Anna and Mainlander to share what they think about the situation with us. I can understand Anna’s concerns about her body – definitely I can feel tha anxiousity. I agree with Mainlander to some extend that you need to be very careful recently even with a doctor. However, I just want to raise the topic of culture shock here and would like everyone of you to comment to express what do you think about it.

Culture shock, or something else?

Whenever someone moves to a different place, especial to a different country, the culture shock will be huge. The shock will be extereme if you move from a western country to China – the typical eastern culture and the developing country.

You will find lots of strange things that you can not understand – the way drivers drive, the way people talking with you, the habits people have here, – almost everything.

This reminded me of an example – may not be properiate to mention here – but just some hints. When the virus of AIDS began to spread to the world, people here in China were so worried. It is generally believed that ALL foreigners are very “dangerous”. I still remember the fear when I saw a foreigner on street in the city. I know some people were very hesitate to shake hand with foreigners although they know AIDS won’t spread via hand shaking. (HIV/AIDS kills an estimated 8,000 people every day; 3 million people per year.) Don’t get me wrong – I completely disagree with the idea now and believe the outbreak of the virus in one place should be regarded as the problem of the whole nation. However, lack of information and mutal understanding causes fear. SARS may be the similar case now, although they are so different in many aspect.

Doctors, believe them or not?

I think the Chinese doctors should still be realiable although some precautions can be taken, such as consulting home doctors. At least they see thousands of patients very month. I do agree that they need to improve their professionalism.

Take precautions, but be calm

My personal suggestion is, take all precautions you can, but be calm. The situation is bad, but MAYBE not as bad as you think – the combination of the panic and the culture shock gave everybody too much pressure.

P.S. I worried if this article is flaming article. I didn’t mean to offend anybody. I just wanted to discuss on the culture shock factors in the SARS-times.

Will Lineage Help Sina?

G asked me about the newly announced cooperation between Sina and NCsoft on Lineage. To be honest, I am not an online game fun. I am talking about this topic from the outsider’s point of view.

Internet Cafes are Popular

In the year of 2002, millions of net cafe emerges throughout China. Whenever you go, you will find the Internet Cafe – in “second-tier” cties like Luoyang, even in Daocheng.

The core business of the Internet Cafes, however, is not the Internet access. By my rough estimation, about 1/2 of the so called Internet Cafe does not provide Internet service. They provide online games to game players.

Online games including some games that don’t need a server. Examples are CS (Counter Strike) and Q3. People with one computer can directly connects to other’s computer on a peer to peer mode to play the game. This sort of games does not need a server so the it is cheap to play. I heard it is about 2-5 RMB per hour.

Online game – Legend

Legend from Korea company AtoZ is absolutely the biggest winner of online game. It granted the permission of server operation to a Chinese company called Shenda (shenda.com). It license the Internet Cafe to run the Legend clients. The Internet Cafes don’t charge the player directly, but the hours they spend on the computers greatly increases such bring more money to the cafes. It is said that a license for Legend will greatly help the business of the Internet Cafe.

Meanwhile, Shenda also sells “value-card” to players to get access to the game. The “value-card” is very profitable since some players will send 1,000 RMB per month on the value card. The Internet Cafe business owner will also get a small margine to sell the value-card.

Besides the income for computer-hours, and value-card, the drinks, and foods served by the Internet cafe also make a large portion of the profit for Intetnet cafes due to the large number of visitors and the long time they spend in the cafe.

The value chain continues

Currently, there are even some people who make a living by playing the online games. The virtual goods in the online games are labelled with value in real money and they can always get a good price in the market. Some goods in Legend can be sold at 1000 RMB to 5000 RMB. According to Sina’s special report (Chinese site), someone sold 5 “magic books” at 5000 RMB each – that is 25,000 RMB. Very nice deal, isn’t it?

To get more goods in the virtual world, they work very hard – actually, they are not players – they are professionals to get more goods in the virtual world and sell them out in the real world. I cannot understand the reason why people are willing to buy the goods but it really happens in the young generation in China.

Money. Money!

At least up to now, online game means money in China. The value chain, as I described, include

  • The game provider, like AtoZ or NCSoft
  • The operator, like Shenda or Sina
  • The Internet cafe – millions of them
  • The gurus in the game field – who sell their goods
  • The players – who seem to have unlimited budget on games

The chain will allocate the money from millions of players among the game provider, the operator, the Internet cafe and other people like those who sell goods.

Lineage means profit to Sina

As you can see, the launch of the new game Lineage will put Sina to the position of the operator and it will definitely be the powerhouse for the profit of Sina.

Shanghai Looks Good – Despit of SARS

The sunny weather continues. The rumor of SARS discontinued. With the recent official news on SARS from the Ministry of Health, the ban for news on the topic of SARS is lifted. Newspapers, TVs, radios and websites rush to report SARS in one night, just as the speed of spreading Bill Gate’s news.

I haven’t tried metro since the first day I heard about SARS. Yesterday, I had a try. I didn’t see any one with a mask then. It is said that about 5-20 people wearing facial masks in metro during the rush hours.

In the bus, I didn’t find any one wearing masks too. People insists to open the window eve in the air-conditioned bus. The only two masks I have ever seen is in the bund areas. The official news reports again and again that there is NO SARS in Shanghai. Shanghai is clean and safe. Don’t need to wear masks…..

I also see another large group of visitor from U.S. in the Ever Bright Hotel. One of them was wearing NATO logo clothes.

P.S. Below is the new version of home page on my blog. Hopefully, it will be online in one week.

Shanghai Saturday

It is such a sunny Saturday here in the city of Shanghai. Good weather gives me very good mood. It rained for 3 days in the last week. I am caught by one of the rain that I was completely wet although I have a umbrella. You can imagine how happy I am to have the sunny (Satur)Day.

New Scanner

With the wedding ceremony in Luoyang coming soon, we decided to create a grant website for the event and create some videos to be played. We have hundreds of photos that need to be scanned. So I rushed into the computer store and bought a Founder F5580 scaner. Just guess the price – 320 RMB (36 USD). It is much cheaper than before – I am not sure whether this price is higher or lower than that in U.S.

picture-f5580-scanner.jpg

Pictures contesy for Tom.com

There are some 500 RMB scanners with 1200dpi resolution. I believe that 600dpi is good enough for me since 300dpi can produce a picture twice as large as the computer screen from a 6′ photo.

Lupu Bridge

Everyday, I will pass the Lupu Bridge in taxi. As the world largest arch bridge, it is almost completed – at least from the eyes of a outsider – the shape and the roads seem be to have been ready. Today, however, is the first day we went onto the bridge – due to the left-turn road construction, all traffic were directed to the bridge and take U-turn on the bridge, then run to the original direction. Hard to understand, isn’t it? Refer to the map below – the original left-turn road were blocked and we took right turn, then u-turn on the bridge (dotted line in the map).

screen-lupu.bridge.new.route-map.jpg

Hand drawn by Jian Shuo Wang. Thanks for the new scanner

I am very excited to see the splendid new bridge. I didn’t bring camera with me. So check this picture of the bridge which was taken 7 months ago.

When completed, it will offer a shortcut from Puxi to Pudong, espcially the Pudong Airport. The Nanpu bridge will be off loaded.

This Site Listed on MSNBC.COM, as SARS Blog

To my surprise, I found my site was listed on MSNBC.com. Here is the URL:

http://www.msnbc.com/news/809307.asp

In a similar vein, Shanghai blogger Jian Shuo Wang is using the help of e-mail from friends to disseminate SARS information on his blog. “Emails are always quicker than local newspapers,” he points out. As early as February 12, before the illness was even given a name, Jian Shuo Wang was relying on, and blogging about, reports from friends in Guangzhou about concern over the disease taking serious hold on the population there.

screen-msnbc.com-weblog.sars.jianshuowang.PNG

I love the idea of Weblog Central on MSNBC. It is the “gates to the world of personal news”. The best thing is that it gives chances for small sites to be listed on the famous news site. My friend R G runs his site of Tiger Cafe and was listed as Best Food Blog. He was also very happy about the link.

Face masks – I was scared, really scared

Want to know people really feel in a SARS infected areas? I can tell you. Before 11:38 AM today, I can still talk about SARS, the data of infected people and how serious the problem is with ease. At 12:38 AM, I saw the first person wearing mask on the street. At 12:40 AM, I saw the second.

I suddenly doubt the quality of the air – I felt shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. It is true – I mean physically. The world suddenly seems so dangerous – just like everyone is dangerous. Although I feel OK very soon, but I do remember the feeling of the shock at that time.

Feeling the danger

To realize the danger and to feel the danger are too different thing. When you realize the danger, you are not worried. What do you think if you know that in Guangzhou, the traffic accidents killed 1739 people in the city of Guangzhou in the year of 2002 alone? (source: pcauto.com [Chinese site])? You are not scared and the travel and business trip to Guangzhou will not be paused. This number is much larger than the number of SARS infected people in Guangzhou. But the world is just more concerned about SARS than traffic accident – it is not because SARS is more dangerous, it is because people can feel the danger.

I want to thank everyone for commenting on my blog. I didn’t expect that so many people were involved. At the very begining, when I have about 50 blog entries, I got about 10 comments. Later, when I completed my first 100 entries, there were about 100 comments. Now this is the 198th article in this blog and I got 478 comments, doubling the number of the blog entries. These comments shows sparkling ideas and timely information about the world. I appreciate everyone’s contribution on this blog which is the source of my passion to continue writing.

My principle on comments

I insist not to delete any comments as long as it is reable – I did saw testing posts before – about one or two. I will leave it for several days to give the poster some time to verify that it really works and delete it for sake of ease of reading.

I don’t change the content of any comment although the system provide the function. If I disagree, I will post my comment under it. I did receive such comments that I wanted to delete but I hold firm against it. Here is one example.

However, I cannot bear anyone writing flaming comment against my other readers. Unfortunately, Wayne, who has posted before, gave me a surprise by leaving this comment. I have to say, no matter what you think, just give out fact and your thoughts. Do not simply give us such comment, please.

P.S. Update on SARS

Take these precautions:

(i) Try to keep your hands away from your face.

(ii) Wash your hand often. If you go out, wash your hand when you reach home.

(iii) Soap and water are a good defence. Cornaviruses cannot withstand any sort of detergent.

(iv) Alcohol-based hand rubs are effective, too.

(v) Keep away from crowded areas.

Thanks Shanghai Knight to share with us about these good tips.

My Dream Travel Destination

There are two much breaking news recently, which convininced me that the world is going crazy:

  • Iraq war – the topic I didn’t cover in this blog at all since I can say nothing about the action to kill peoples and being killed. Terrible!
  • SARS – the deadly virus that spread to the whole world – the spread of concerns are wider.
  • The China country wide fake news of “Bill Gates was Murdered in LA”
  • Recent suicide of the famous actor Leslie Cheung – Why?
  • ……

Any piece of the news is shocking enough for me to think about. I am just a little bit tired of tracking these stuff in the blog. Let me take a short break today to describe my travel plan this year. Don’t worry. I will keep updating the news related stuff later.

I am very committed to travel to one of the following places, in the order of possibility.

Europe

Going to European remains a dream for me since I have never been there. Due to the travel visa issues, the only country opening for travellers from China is German (more may have been opened. I didn’t check the data yet.)

However, there are some workaround that I can go with some business group – the travel agencies always has good ways to send people to anywhere they want using workaround for policies.

Egypt

Very nice place. I believe it is an adventure. However, I didn’t have any information about the route to this country yet. Anyone has any advice? Anyone has been there before?

U.S

U.S. is in the third place I will choose. Although I have been there for many times, they are all boring business trip. I am still interested in Washington D.C., Las Vegas…..

I believe many of my readers will have splendid ideas of where I should go for a 20 days vacation. Please advice. Thanks.

— Thank God for the time to think about good things instead of the virus, the war, the murder and the death these days. —

SARS Concerns Spread in Shanghai

THIS PAGE CONTAINS UNCONFIRMED INFORMATION. TREAT IT AS RUMOR ONLY.

In my previous blog entry of No SARS Case Found Shanghai, I quoted the Shanghai Morning Post’s headline that there is no SARS in Shanghai. However, at the mean time, the unofficial news of SARS has been widely spread among the people. Now one week has passed. The situation becomes worse. Although the offical media still reports that there is no SARS in Shanghai, the citizens have got aware of the deadly virus and taking precautionary measures.

Emails are always quicker than local newspapers

Today, I have received 8 emails from my friends from different locations today in my inbox about the SARS preventional measures. I am not a person who want to forwarding non-business information but this time, I am buried in the emails of SARS. I can imagine the speed of the spreading of the information. If the Internet is still the Internet two days ago, every person in Shanghai with a frequently-used email box should get a copy of the message that there IS SARS in Shanghai.

Despite of official news, preventionary actions are undergoing

Many multinational companies have got instruction from the Asia Pacific headquarters to take preventional actions, such as distributing masks and offer sick employees paid sick leave so that they can stay in home. According to these comments from my readers after my previous blog entries, the situation is becoming worse and worse. “They have started to spray disinfectant spray in huaihaixilu. ” – according to yo.

WHO data

According to WHO’s report on March 31, Shanghai was not listed in the affected areas while Beijing, Guangdong, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, Shanxi, Taiwan Province were on the list.

Although some other media quoted WHO that four cases were found in Shanghai, among which two are health workers. I cannot find the source in WHO’s website.

Meetings postponed

According to IDG (via Google News), Sun has postponed its Sun Network Conference 2003 to be held in Shanghai in April 8-9. 4000 registered attendents and 250 partner companies were impacted.

Meanwhile, the Hard Rock show in Beijing and Shanghai were also cancelled. However, no evidence shows that it is related to SARS fear.

I have created a special SARS category on various aspect of SARS in Shanghai. You are welcome to read and comment.
