Security Tightened at SJTU

SJTU = Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

From May 1, the security level of SJTU has been raised to a level I had never saw, heard of, or even imagined in the last 15 years (since I first stepped in the campus in 1995). I saw the different today.

The campus was completely closed with the big automatic fence about the height of my shoulder closed all the time.

For cars, they will check the specially issued permit and an IC card before they open the gate. They have to make sure that your car is of resident on the campus.

For people, they check carefully for student, faculty ID or other working permit one by one. They opened a very narrow entrance just allowing one person to pass, and there are many security guards jamming the entrance.

For others who don’t have a campus car permit, or don’t have a student/faculty ID, sorry, no entrance.

The problem for us now is, the package delivery people has to call the receiption from outside the campus (like UPS, Fedex, or EMS), and the person needs to go out of the campus himself to pick it.

What is all this for?

  1. “What is all this for?”

Well, it is some kind of preemptive meature to prevent something upcoming about which the government knows but does not want you to know.

You may guess a lot of things about politics but the economic picture looks more dicey down the road.

  3. Oh wow! reminds me of the time of SARS, we were locked on campus for 3-4 weeks, and no cars could go in… Is this the MH of XJH campus? At least students can walk free in and out of campus this time.

  5. With the recent attacks on school children including a kindergarten, it is no surprise to see beefed up security measures being taken.

  6. my kid’s kindergarten will be sealed after 9 am, which means even parents are not allowed to enter after 9 am. it’s said this is a tightened security measure after the recent attacks on kindergartens.

as for tightened security in SJTU mentioned by Jianshuo, i agree with shanghai-ren, there might be something upcoming but we don’t know yet

  7. I think it’s because of recent attacks in schools…read on….

  8. I suspect this possibly may have to to with SJTU’s role in the hacking attacks against Google and the University’s ties to the PLA. The Google incident event would obviously make them a target for increased attention, and I would hazard a guess that SJTU itself may have recently suffered a breach. For example, someone may have walked on to campus, logged-on to the network expressly to open security holes. But I am just speculating.

  9. Hi, I am new here. Dear Jian Shuo, I saw your beautiful photos taken in Tahiti and I would like to use it for an academic paper regarding water treatment. May I have your permission to use that photo for academic purposes only? Thank you very much.
