The Facts

Google Weblog is my favorite weblog.
I guess it generates huge traffic to Google with its samples.What Happened?
Aaron talked about the UPC code search function and provided a sample search: 036000250015
I was curious to see how many people follow that link.What I Did
I posted an entry (this page) with 036000250015 in title.
I put a hit counter here:

I hope this page is indexed by Google in the next few days. It should be around January 20, 2004.
I hope this page is #1 in the result list. Google likes keywords in title.
I hope you also get some idea about how many people clicked the link.More
The actual number should be 300% of the hit counter number. I suppose less than one out of three people will click on my link after checking the genuine result.
This is just for fun.

Seems this will give a well (althouth not very accurate) idea about how many people will be link here via google.

I think google is faster than you think... I'll bid a quid for it will reach the top

rank in google before 18th :)

Yes. You are right. Google is much faster than I expected. From this experiment, I found the following behavior of Google.

1. There is a gap between crawling and displaying. The page was crawled at the time it was created. I changed the title from "036000250015" to "UPC Number 036000250015" at time - so the page of "036000250015" should exist only for about 5 minutes. Google crawled to that page (just an coincident) in that 5 minutes window on Jan 15 and display it as the result on Jan 17 (all are Shanghai local time). The time should be left for Index.

2. The Google result changes quickly. Yesterday night, I found this entry is the first in the Google result, but today, it is replaced by the home page of my site - it is the success of PageRank number against title matching.

This experiment helped me to learn a lot about Google.

Today, Jan 18, the Google result for item changed again. My site Wangjianshuo's blog homepage is displayed as the last one in the result list. The result is:

The reason this page is moved to lower rank may be because, the key word 036000250015 is moved from the first line to less important position. So the conclusion is, put your keywords as closer to the start of document as possible.

Also, the entry http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/20040115_upc_number_036000250015.htm is not in the list at all. I am disappointed on that. The google rule is, there is only one result (two sometimes) from a website. The homepage http://home.wangjianshuo.com over rated than the individual page because it has higher PageRank (PR5)....

It is wired that this morning, the UPC Number 036000250015 became the first entry again and the home page (http://home.wangjianshuo.com) is still the last result in the search result. So Google posted two pages from the same website as two different entries in the search result, one on top and one on bottom. I guess this is intermediate status and it will change very soon. My guess is, the home page will be merged into the indented entry after the page "UPC Number 036000250015"

That is why I called it a "Well" but not "accurate" understanding about google :)

Higher PR rate sites might be scaned more frequently

than lower ones.

A good topic and interesting results :)
