We are trying to decide when to come to Shanghai this year. We usually come for the month of November. Will we still be able to see the expo sites? Can we buy tickets? Should we come toward the end of October? I read that the last week is one of the prime times, so it will be hard to get tickets then.
Do you have any suggestions? We missed the Olympics and wished we were there if only to participate in the 热闹. We don’t want to be in the US wishing we were in China this time.
@zjemi, I really have no idea. But I do know the Expo closes on Oct 31, so November is not a good idea, if you just want to see the four permanent building and a big construction site (well, a destruction site). You will have better idea about whether the ticket is hot or not after May, and you can make decision at that time. Based on the fact that every family in Shanghai gets a free ticket, it does not seem to be that crowded.
A few weeks ago, I made a comment in another of Jianshuo’s blog entry this tread within the parenthesis:
(I know many visitors will be coming to Shanghai to see the World Expo, but knowing how crowded Shanghai already is without the Expo and the added population, I’m afraid the road condition will be awfully unbearable. The restaurants, markets will all be crowded as well. )
That said, ZJEMI, my advice is that if you are like me who don’t like crowded environment, noise, cigarette odor, and long wait for transportation, food, shops, then don’t go to Shanghai before summer is over. Try to go in Sept or Oct. Remember many local people don’t have the habit of queuing. It bothers me to hell when people cut in lines.
I live in Shanghai right now, but I have booked a flight to go to the States just a few days before the opening of EXPO and the big crowd swarming into this city.
Congratulations on Shanghai not just for the World Expo, but for beating out London in having the world’s longest Metro system.
:-)
Hi! My kids and I will be in Shanghai on April 19-25. Is there a soft opening of the Expo before May 1? Can we have a glimpse or at least picture of the pavilions or the permanent 4 buildings?
I heard there is an opening at the night of April 30, but it is not something as fancy as Olympics
