Thoughts about Being a Leader

Here are some random thoughts of recent inspirations, for my own tips about being a leader.

  • Never confusing people by acting as both consultant and manager. People get confused when they use a manager as a consultant, since they can hardly tell which instruction comes from the person with consultant hat (suggestions), or from the person with manager hat (an order). When combined with the two, people will ignore your “must” list, or take your suggestions too seriously. The best way to do is, do not try to be a consultant, although you can.
  • Use your knowledge as a way to set goal, instead of help people doing it. This is similiar to my first point. Being able to do it myself is good, but don’t try to do it, or even try too hard to tell people how to do it. Use knowledge as a powerful tool to set reasonable, clear, complete, actionable, specifcm, messurable, time-bound goals, instead of going into details to tell people what to do. If you do check all the details, you get frustrated, and your team is frustrated, and they tend to rely on your decisions, which is bad for an organization.
  • Don’t be a working place and a training center at the same time. Training center is about changing a person, or improving a person, or empower a person. Company is all about making things happen with the right human resources. So the company’s goal is to select the right person, instead of creating the right person. If the chemistry between a person and a company does not match, the best thing to do is to find a better match, for both the company and the person, instead of changing a person, or even harder, to change a company.

  1. Hi Jianshuo, Great inspirations.

I’m a totally new manager( 3 weeks). In fact I was not ready being a manager. I did not even do plan being a manager so soon. My boss left the company and his boss did not find the succession. Then I got a promotion suddently. God, I was so upseting.

Could you launch some new entries for being a manager or something about that?

Could you please recommend some books about the managerment methodology to me?

The Olimpic which shall create a image that China is the new boss of sport…the new manger….. olimpic which bring huge shame to the corrupt OIC body… olimpic.. that due Darfur, Tibet, Pollution, shall had never taken place….. and despite censorship several boycots are takign places.. and already seem that they are already nicknamed and will be remembered in history as the Shame of Olimpiads 2008…… prove what mean for the majority of us HAN Chinese be the New Manager, the New Boss….

  3. Hi Jian Shuo,

A manager’s duty is to achieve goals and objectives through the people under his charge. Not all of the people will be able to perform as expected as their capabilities differ. As such, he will have to guide and train them to do their job. Depending on their intelligence level, educational background, etc. the manager may have to show them literally all the steps to do their job. When a manager makes a suggestion, there is a hint of respect for the staff’s capability and that the satff will be able to carry on further by himself. An order is usually given only when the staff is too thick or stubborn enough not to listen. A manager has many roles to play and wears many hats depending on who he is dealing with and the circumstances at the time. At the end of the day, it is his responsibility to achieve the goals and objectives with whoever that are assigned to him whether by choice of otherwise.

  4. Life is complicated and one of the most important but also difficult tasks to perform is become a good leader.

Examples are everywhere in the world contexts and news.

Talking about it, I heard many pages and websites have been blocked lately about the recent news on the southwest.

    Any comments from your side?

Thx always for your honesty and information!

And congratulations for being on TV again! I will try to see the repetitions=)

  7. I think the great leader will not force their thoughts to be accepted by his staff, saying that is easy, but hard to do. Anyway, I will try, :-)
