My New Laptop – Dell Latitue D600

I am happy to receive a new laptop Dell Latitude D600. It is larger than my previous one – Dell Latitude C400. This is the third Dell laptop I used:

The laptop become senior as I am growing to senior. :-D

Dell Latitude D600

This is a nice one. I don’t have time to check the details of this laptop yet. Here are some facts about it I discovered immediately after I get it.

Intel Centrino Mobile Technoloy

Since there is a Centrino logo on the right corner of the keyboard, I know it comes with built-in wireless network adaptor. So I am able to start the laptop for the first time in my bed room and it automatically connects to my Wireless AP and accesses to Internet via my FTTB+LAN from Shanaghai telecom. Oh. I love wireless. My wireless dream finally comes true.

Intel Pentium M Processor

It reads as Intel (R) Pentium (R) M proccessor 1600 MHz.

Other

1 G Memory + 55G Disk + DVD ROM / CDRW

Screen

It has a large 17′ LCD screen. It looks so nice after I get used to the small 14′ Latitude C400 screen.

Blue Tooth

There is a blue tooth indicator besides the disk, power indicator. It seems it support Bluetooth. I assume the blue tooth module is not included by default. So my laptop is still not bluetooth enabled.

Conclusion

I am excited about this new laptop. I can run complicated Virtual PC images on this laptop, including running a large domain with three domain controllers and Exchange Servers on the same laptop. Bravo!

  1. WJS,

Conrgrats on the new Laptop. I myself have the next model, the D800. I am quite hapy with it. I also have the wireless and bluetooth options. I use it to do all my graphic and CAD visualizations. It is that fast, and the graphics are that good ;-)

  2. i have always been an ibm thinkpad fan myself. currently am using a t30 for the past two years and it still serves me well. bluetooth and wifi built in.

    thinkpad rulez man.

  3. I am using Dell latitude as well, and my wife is using ThinkPad, I agree ThinkPad is more durable than Dell, I have changed battery once, cable once. While Dell seems more friendly towards Linux than IBM, I am daul-booting with Win2k and Mandrake on my Dell.

  4. mw, you’re right. I have a Thinkpad A31p, this is my best “friend” ever !

1GB mem, super top fast graphics 1600×1200, SVHS in and out, Bluetooth (good with my my Nokia 6230), FireWire, and 70MB HD. Capable of running UG 3D prof. CAD software directly.

    BUT – TOO HEAVY !

I carry it to work and back every day and I have to use a backpack to stand the 3.8 kg’s….

  5. Hi, nice laptop i checked it out on dell.com. I just got a thinkpad T40 for myself the other month. Within a week a got my notebook infected with a few virussus, damn. But the notebook itself is great a side from too little memory. I just love the wireless features.

yeah, the A & R series are rather heavy. that is why i have always chosen the Ts. before that i was using the 570 which was pretty good too. my kid is using that now.

lee, with the world it is now, virus checkers and defensive computing is a must. also set for windows to receive all updates. some of these updates are critical to protecting your system. in fact, am seriously considering that my next thinpad should be linux driven. sorry JS, microsoft should do a better job in protecting their users. i know that they try but …

what i understand from ibmers, linux installs really well on thinkpad with all the required drivers etc. thinkpad with linux and open office (www.openoffice.org) should be a killer comibination. the only thing that is keeping me back is that i have outlook synched with my SE P900. there seems to be no available synch program with any linux based pim :(

  7. mw, I am not really a geek guy, but check out this website for your SE P900:

    http://home.tiscali.be/philipa/p900.html

I started using Linux on Dell Laptop back in 1997, quite happy with it. IBM and Compaq seem to all have something “their-own”(reserved tiny system partition, PCMCIA card, video card), it is much better nowdays though. while Dell, due to its heavy OEM, is better suported by Linux programmer.

  8. i use a dell latitude d600 myself – its a great laptop but not very friendly to linux – why? its bios no longer supports APM yet in order to suspend to RAM in the recent kernels (including 2.6), you really need APM. ACPI never works, and i dont see it working in the next 5 years!!! If dell could give APM support in their BIOS, it would be really great for Linux users. Forget swsup in 2.6 kernel, it takes a serious coder to make it work :-(

  15. Hi,

Please i have a DELL D610 laptop. From the device manager, the infra-red has been installed but, it still doesn’t work.I tried allocating COM 1 to it and putting off the serial port off but, it still didn’t work. I have tried all the COMs but it still didn’t work. How can i enable my infra red. I use windows XP

  16. HI all,

The Dell latitudes use a bluetooth chips that clips into the motherboard internally.

It doesn’t always come as standard so you may want to check before you buy.

The easiest way to check if your latatude has bluetooth installed is to boot into the bios screen by pressing ‘F2’ whilst the Dell logo is on the screen buring bootup.

You can disable/enable the bluetooth chip from the bios.

    Good Luck!

  38. hi there

i have just got the Dell D600 and was wondering how i get the bluetooth to start up?

    any ideas??

  39. I would truely like to thank you both, I finally resolved my problem and now have my wireless card working on my D620. I went back as you suggested Dawid and just reinstalled and rebooted. But only after rebuilding the linux install and starting fresh and as Mike suggested installing the Kernel-Devel for my kernel as well that solved everything. Thanks again for all your feedback and this blog. Now on to the next issue to solve, getting my wireless to work at the office with their WPA setup. LOL.

  40. Regarding the Latitude D600 Bluetooth:

The module sits right behind the Kensington security slot (under the left hand rest). The module is held by two wrongly dimensioned slots in the plastic frame. This design flaw means the module is free to move and thus stressing the solder joints of the tiny SMD connector. I’ve fixed two of those cases – and suspect quite a few of the machines with “no Bluetooth” actually suffers from loose Bluetooth modules…

The bad news is that you unfortunately have to remove the entire top panel of the notebook:

remove the panel with the power button (tilt the screen back, use a screewdriver to unclick the sides of the panel, lift it and unclick by pusing a bit towards the screen)

remove the keyboard (two screews, one connector)

remove the screen (three screws in the hinges, one for GND of the cable – unplug the cable)

remove just about all screws from the bottom of the notebook except the four tiny ones around the dock connector and fixing screws for HD/optical drive

remove the small screw from the top panel (near the connectors on the back edge)

unplug the cable for the touch pad and remove the top panel (clicked in at the front edge)

Now you can see the small vertical bluetooth PCB near the front/left corner… (Or just the small white connector if you are unlucky and have a cheap version ;-)

You might re-attach screen / keyboard and enter the BIOS (F2) while pressing down on the PCB. On the two D600 I fixed this actually made the Bluetooth show as “intstalled”. If you succed in this – polish off your soldering skills! It’s not a beginners task… (you may want to remove the HD cage and definitely need to remove the HD)

  41. Both Bluetooth and IRDA needs to be enabled in the BIOS. After that you might need to download/install drivers from Dell…

If BIOS says “not installed” for the Bluetooth you either don’t own a Bluetooth module – or it’s broken. The latter is not unlikely – imho. the mechanical solution around the module is flawed making the connector solder joints shake loose…. (I’ve wrote a guide for accessing it in another forum – but be warned: It’s not an easy task to fix it: http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/20040709_my_new_laptop_-_dell_latitue_d600.htm)

    Cheers,

    Gnyff :-)

  44. I have this computer. My computer looks exactly like this picture.

It’s pretty tight. I got a lot of compliments and…it sets me apart

from everyone’s elses laptop (well most of them, I’m the only one

I’ve seen with this kind of laptop). Yeah, plus

if my computer just happens to be in a row of other laptops…I’ll

instantly know which one is mine. :)

  45. Dear Sir/Madam,

Can you please send the price list of dell 630.

    with regards,

    kaul

  46. I have just had my second Dell. Thinking by spending £1500 this time I’d

would get someting really good. It’s OK but that is about all. The keyboard

didn’t light up when it came as per spec, so they sent a replacement part

    which my IT guy fitted.

There are other issues but all Dell say arrgogantly is ‘they don’t supply faulty goods’

    Now they ignore my emails.

  47. Everything seems excellent with this latest Dell laptop,

i have one concern about it’s battery as we have seen many

time in past that it’s battery got exploded …. has Dell

taken some initiatives to erase this problem?

else is fine i would love to buy this one.

  48. I have latitude d610 the infrared could not be activated and can be noticed in device manager in the system. Also the system could not play video cd even with window media player. Pls help me, what can i do.

  49. This idea has also sorts of potential. Users are free to do what they want on the host OS, including installing their own applications and data.

  50. I have been really glad after reading this blog as the knowledge which has been given via this blog is simply tremendous. I would congratulate and appreciate the blogger for doing this much hard work.
