Shanghai is a city without high mountains. Sheshan is maybe the only hill Shanghai has. Shanghai has a river - Huangpu River, but Huangpu is not that interesting - you cannot sail or swim in it. Shanghai is near sea, but there is no beach. People like hiking may have to climb stairs of buildings. People like sailing may only be able to watch cargo boats in the river. People like sea cannot even touch the river of the sea due to the muddy shores.
It seems the only interesting natural places in Shanghai are lakes. Recently, the Dishui Lake (Dishuihu) opened to public. It is at the end of A2 (near the sea), and is nice. We went there in May. I just saw the pictures and post it here.

For me, the nicest site in shanghai is the campus of Min Hang
Posted by: Lancelot on September 15, 2006 3:51 AMA nice place to relax and get away from the crowds and cars are rooftop gardens. I've noticed quite a few advertisements of restaurants on rooftops recently. It's convenient to get to (just a 11 rmb cab ride away).
I do miss my home country with all the mountains, oceans, lakes, beaches, and 4 seasons. Shanghai needs to improve not just on buildings, but on the natural environment for the residents here.
What the Shanghai government calls green space is not considered green space in Europe nor North America. It's still considered an urban concrete jungle.

I went there when the 3 ring roads around the lake was getting dressed up by flowers and trees. A funny thing was, that all the traffic lights were working, but NO cars.
Should I obey them or not ? After a while I decided not...
The water has a low salinity, because it is water from Donghai which is now mixed with freshwater. I would like to go sailing there later...
(The sailing club at Dianshanhu is SO crowded now. Too successful...)
There are facilities for kayaking and other rowing sports already.

i can sure west lake is beutiful!
but you know that as a student i will have not much chance to be there!
may be nest year or two i can do that !
at this time the thing i can do is to look more at there !
I wouldn't touch the water in Dishui Lake. It is a lovely lake to walk around although (or perhaps because) it isn't fully developed yet. We were there in late April and there were dead fish everywhere. Ugh. I guess low salinity is bad for saltwater fish. Funny that!
