It is very rare that Shanghai snowed so heavily this year - for the first time in the last 10 years. We entered the new year of 2005 in white.

It was icy on the road inside the residential area while the public roads are completely clear of snow already. People obviously don't have any experience to deal with ice and snow. Traffic accidents happen everywhere. My Goudaner was completely covered by snow. The snow on the rear window, which is the deepest, reaches to 3 cm already. Both the rear and the front window were covered by snow and ice. It is not possible to remove it by hand since the ice has been very sticky to the glass. To avoid break the glass, I have to warm up the car very carefully and increase the temperature from inside. About 20 minutes later, the snow and ice began to melt so I can clear a small hole on the front. 10 minutes later, the whole front window is clear so I can start to drive. It is funny.

The old Chinese saying is: "Snow indicate a fruitful new year." I hope it will be. My heart goes out to the victoms of Tsunami in South East Asia. China (at least Shanghai, or my home) is not affected. Happy New Year to everyone!

the snow was quite a surprise- especially after having just moved here from tropical thailand. after work i took some pictures on nanjing donglu. the road was very slippery, lots of ice!
no worries about breaking the window by removing the ice. i grew up in pittsburgh where during the winter i'd often have to take snow and ice off the window and i can tell you the windows can take a lot of abuse.

how can humble family endure such a cold winter without heating system or air conditioner in south china.

Yepp, here in Germany we are used to scraping the ice from the windows "full stroke", as many people have no own house and garage to keep the car over night. Often, when you wake up in the morning after a cold and snowy night, you can already hear "strange noises" from the street, itīs the other people "treating" there cars, who donīt want to loose to much time getting to work.
Also, no need to really carefully heat up, here often, you start the engine, set heating and ventilation to max, route it on the windows and hope that that stuff will go away as fast as possible (while you still start scratching, especially on the side windows, that will not get so much from the internal heating). Many cars have electric heating for the rear and even the front window, but this will be heavy on the battery, especially on a cold day.
I hate to do all that on such a cold day. After a short while, all your sensation in the fingers go away if you donīt have really good gloves. Good that we did not yet have one this winter.
