Trusted Tourism Agency

Stephen asked me about a reliable package tour from Shanghai to Beijing:

Can you please recommend any reliable package tour from Shanghai?

He is the not the first one to ask me the same question. Actually, there should be 20 emails around this topic I received so far.

Well. Since I don’t use travel agency too much for my domestic or international travel, I don’t have personal experience to guide me to give you an answer. But I believe there are some choices, based on what I heard.

They seem to be more famous.

I would like to bring the questiont to my readers: do you have any recommendation based on your experiences?

P.S. I will be in Beijing in the next few days.

  1. But as far as I know, most of services by Ctrip are help-yourself packages. They just follow the regular model of travelling business: contract with local travel agencies. Usually they only provide the least services. But the prices are quite reasonable.

  2. Also, you can not book flights on line in the English version with Ctrip. Have anyone heard of http://www.wacts.com. Seems like its similar to ctrip, but they have an office in Chicago. I’m trying to book something through them. I have never used them before, so if anyone has info on them, I’d love to hear about it.

  3. I went to Beijing during the May vacation and arranged my trip at http://www.china-sss.com/. I didn’t book it online but at the booking office at Shanghai People’s Square. You need someone who speaks chinese to go with you though as the women in the travel agency didnt speak a lot of english. During the tour it was very busy everywhere. Our tourguide explained everything in Chinese, and most things also in English.

  4. I was able to use the business office of American Express to arrange my travel last year. They did an excellent job but I do not think they are available to pleasure travelers. It would be worth a phone call to find out. This is slightly off topic but I would like to highly recommend a Beijing guide for those who might be interested. He is Mr. Wang Xue Liang and can be reached by email at tour@163bj.com. I was extremely satisfied with his services. This is probably not important for the locals that are reading this but if you are a confused American such as myself Mr. Wang will be able to greatly enhance your visit to Beijing. A person could also see what other services his travel agency offers, they probably offer travel packages, but I have not used them.

  5. This is the other Stephen who was asking for the tour operater in Shanghai.

I have sided with the holiday package offered by Shanghai Airlines but the booking will not commence until june, these people would not take visa over the phone and I have to buy RMB bank draft prior to my arrival to Shanghai.

Trust the trip to Beijing would be fun and thank everybody for locating the tour operator for me.

  11. I am sorry for the delay, I am based in Phoenix and am looking for programmers who know C++ and/or Perl. The area would be either bejing or shanghiai. My plan is to open an office within a few months. I currently have Russian programmers and have slowly come to the conclusion that the concept of deadlines is impossible to convey, they do good work but take forever. I attended a University in Taipei many years ago and still remember how focused everyone was and how everyone had a sense of urgency. If you are interested please email me directly at a12357 at earthlink.net thanks!

  12. Here I would like to recommend an online travel agency where you can get very quick response and competitive price:

    http://www.chinaodysseytours.com

At China Odyssey Tours there are at least 8 online travel consultants which take care of the individual request all the time (that’s the difference from the above mentioned websites!). They specialize in providing private China tour packages, customized tours, Yangtze river cruises (the lowest price) and hotel bookings.

By the way, I’m an online marketer in travel business for many years. I’m familiar with all the above mentioned websites.

    Yours,

    Paul

  18. May 30th, Paul Yin posted about China Odyssey Tours. I am about to book a travel package with them. But I am alarmed that they prefer to have payment sent via Western Union. Should I be worried? Has anyone else expereinced this type of payment request, can anyone explain?

  19. Lisa H,

I would suggest you to use only Visa or AE for payment, at least it will give you some protection if things went sour.

Last summer, I booked my tour with china-sss.com with visa and paid cash upon departure, no problem.

  20. Any idea how much overweight baggage will cost on Inter China flights? We are scheduled to fly economy class which has 20KG limit. Do you have to buy another ticket or what?

  22. A useful service for booking package tours in China is offered by CITS Guilin via their website http://www.chinahighlights.com. They offer tailor-made packages to various destinations around China as well as some fixed itineraries. One of their specialities is Yangtze Cruises (which will still be going ahead and will still offer a very special trip, even after the Three Gorges Dam is completed). Their website is very informative and they are very flexible, quick and helpful (even to the extent that they may suggest you book parts of your trip yourself (e.g. hotels) if you want to save money!). They speak excellent English (I dealt with Angela Gong) and supply detailed and well-written itineraries. You can make payment by direct transfer to their bank account from your Chinese RMB account, or in $US. Pricewise, they have some very good deals. The one thing they don’t seem to do so well is the airport and other transfers. Their local people on the ground in some locations are not very experienced. The transfers are optional, so if you are the independent type I would suggest a DIY approach. However, the local guides do speak good English and are very eager to please, and they do save you from potential hassles with taxi drivers.

  23. China is developing so fast. Before it is turning too modernized, do hurry up to come and see the original way of the country. Another negative news for international tourists is that Chinese currency is getting stronger and stronger. Therefore, the travel cost is higher than before. Please visit the websites at http://www.easytourchina.com and http://www.chinatourhub.com for more China travel news and information.

  25. One of my foreign friends, James H. Yanke has used the travel service offered by http://www.tour-beijing.com. he strongly recommends this travel service based in beijing. Below is the feedback he has sent to http://www.tour-beijing.com :

I want to thank you very much for operating our 4-day Beijing tour for my family. Thanks to your help as well as your tour guide–Allen. All three of us had a wonderful time and enjoyed a trip with minimal worries.

Right from the start, I was impressed with your quick response to my initial requirement list. I gave the same requirement list to a few different travel agents. Your turn around time was the shortest and your proposal was the best, satisfied most of the requirements, and was within budget.

As you can see, Mr. Li, you did a wonderful job and we are very satisfied clients. I have been telling my friends about my experience with you and I sincerely hope that you will get more business from them should they decide to visit Beijing.

    Thank you again.

  27. Last October i went to Southern Xinjiang. Kuqa is loacted in southern Xinjiang at the southern foot of the Tianshan Mt. It was recorded that it was once an important town on the central ancient Silk Road. It is now under the control of of Aksu Prefecture. It was influenced by various cultures and the Qiuci civilization ! It was where Qiuci City was once built. Qiuci City was discovered after having disappeared for over 10 centuries. The Kizil and Kumtura caves, both lying on the Muzart River still house 3rd and 4th century treasures of fresco painting. For more informtion, please refer to http://www.etours.cn

  28. Basically, the Tibetan climate is not as harsh as many people imagine it to be. Tibet has a dry, cold climate with an average annual temperature of 1Co (34Fo). Temperatures in the mountains and plateaus are especially cold, and strong winds are common year round. The river valleys experience a more moderate climate. Lhasa and central Tibet have an average temperature of 0Co (32Fo) in December and an average of 17Co (60Fo) in June. The daily temperature range is great. On a typical summer day, the temperature can rise from 3Co (37Fo) before sunrise to 27Co (81Fo) by midday. In general, temperatures in Tibet frequently drop suddenly after sunset. The average annual precipitation is 381 mm (15 in), with the largest amount falling in the southeast. The best time of year to be in Tibet is from April to the beginning of November, after which temperatures start to plummet. The central Tibet, including Lhasa, Gyantze, Shigatze and Tsedang, generally has very mild weather from April to November, though July and August can be rainy – these two months usually see around half of Tibet’s annual rainfall. October and November often bring some dazzling clear weather and daytime temperatures can be quite comfortable at Tibet’s lower altitude. The coldest months are from December to February. It is not impossible to visit Tibet in winter. The low altitude valleys of Tibet (around Lhasa, Shigatse and Tsedang) see very little snow. Spring does not really get under way until April, though March can have warm sunny days and is not necessarily a bad month to be in Tibet.

  30. China Highlights provide tailor-made tours, Yangtze River Cruises and China Hotel bookings for independent (solo) travelers, couples, families, or groups throughout China.

  31. Another way to visit China is to use Audio Walking tours.

I have tested those of Chinatrackers.com.

Very convenient because I don’t like to travel as part of a group.

More their are of very high quality, and it is much more cheaper than to hire a tour guide !!!

  32. Shanghai is amazing and has lots to see. here are the most popular tour packages to discover this city and around.

  33. Shanghai is one of the four municipalities under the direct jurisdiction of the central government. A leader in finance, industry and trade, Shanghai boasts the largest population – approximately 15 million – in all of China. Shanghais history of revolution and culture attract tourists home and abroad. Being regarded as “Paris of China” and as the paradise for shopping, Shanghai has become an ideal city for tourism

The metropolitan of Shanghai is Chinas financial center and is now undergoing one of the fastest economic expansions that the world has ever seen. The center of the city is divided into two areas by the Huangpu River. Pudong, to the east, is a new business district, classified as a “tariff free zone”, is growing rapidly.

The most impressive street of Shanghai is the Bund. It is in every sense old Shanghais commercial heart, with the river on one side, the offices of the leading banks and trading houses on the other. Nanjing Road is the center for theatres and cinemas as well as one of the most crowded shopping streets in the world. Besides, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Huangcheng Miao and Yuyuan Garden are also a must in Shanghai.

  34. Anyone know how to apply visa to Taiwan for Chinese passport holder? I’ve been searching this for weeks and couldn’t find any useful information.
