Still Working with IPowerWeb

By Jian Shuo Wang on 2004-04-04 00:26 · IPowerWeb

I am also in the support business as ipowerweb’s support team is. I have created 8 cases for IPowerWeb, called them at 1-888-511-HOST for support for three times (via non-toll free international distance call) and I even complained directly to their QA manager via telephone for about 15 minutes. Now the simplest thing to point wangjianshuo.com to the hsot they gave me is still pending. I have checked with the QA manager to see if I can publish the support cases to the website so you have an idea of how frustrated customer feels. It is a great experience for me to learn the support business from the customer’s perspective instead of from the support center.

Wangjianshuo.com has been down for one week and it is pending on IPowerWeb’s support people to find out the problem - the simplest problem. They asked me to wait for 24 hours for the domain name to be alive, while I am very sure that it will not work no matter how long I waited - they just didn’t put it into their DNS server yet. Now it is in their DNS but point to the wrong IP address. Well. It takes another 24 hour to get a response. I have already paid for more than 100 RMB international long distance phone call fee for contacting them and paid much more money to hear the waiting music - average of 8 minutes. It proves a dissatisified customer will tell more than 20 persons about the experience. I hope I can post the emails between me and IPowerWeb soon after I get their confirmation.

Aieeee, how frustrating!

Once DNS record is updated it takes time to propagate the changes to the rest of the world. For instance, If the DNS server in the west coast of theUS, once it's updated, the change will be available for people in the east coast in a few days. So guess it might take longer to have changes take affect for users in China.

I'm using them too for my weblog, Jianshuo, and the start with them was indeed not easy. My weblog was then not yet in the air, like yours it. When it works, it works perfectly - at least until now.

I have hosted a number of different websites with ICDSoft. Those guys rock! The longest I ever waited for a trouble ticket to be answered was 20 minutes. They are very helpful and dirt cheap. I have been with them for years.

Jian - I setup my first blog last night using Moveabletype and a couple of your articles helped me through some bumps in the road. Thanks for your help!
— Brett Hager · 2004-04-05 09:29
I agree, ICDSoft is the best overall--they are not only the cheapest, but the most feature-rich and detail-oriented of any webhost I've ever seen.

The domain www.wangjianshuo.com works now, but it seems to be pointing to the same page as home.wangjianshuo.com does. Those two used to be different, right?

By the way, anyone knows where I can find cheap reliable JSP hosting?
— Song · 2004-04-06 08:27
oh, why i can't see Fanfan's blog?

Ipowerweb's support sucks!!!! the worst i ever experienced
— d · 2004-05-12 11:19
ipowerweb's vDeck is down ALL THE TIME. Totally unreliable. It is not worth even that small amount of money when you can't get the job done. Stay away form them!

I'm writing this cos at this very moment I'm waiting for the damn thing to come back :(
— Tea Bore · 2005-03-10 05:33
I have not had a problem with ipowerweb. I thought the vdeck was down too, but then I realized that it uses port 8087. Make sure your firewall has 8087 open and you should be good to go.
— Brian · 2005-08-16 06:19
half a million hosting customers up 99.9, 1 person whines and all of a sudden the whole company sucks? Try godaddy, or rackspace , yahoo etc. Every host has problems. People + machines=problems. There is no perfect host.
— pl · 2005-12-30 12:08
Nice attempt pl,

btw, are you on a ipowerweb payroll? just wondering ( i happened to see your comment for ipowerweb in some other blogs !)

For me - ipowereb sucks big time!!

avoid this company.

want proof? just complete a domain registration with them and see what happens to your domain 'purchase' . No support , no emails and after one complete day they asked me to verify that i was the owner of the card!!. Blast them!!!! they made me wait for one complete day after i 'purchased' a domain and all the time the domain was free for all to grab !! Need i say more ? I will publish my complete experience with them in a nice downloadable ebook format soon.
— aditya · 2006-05-21 05:43
I can tell anybody that iPowerweb's technical support is horrible. There are not words I and find to describe my personal degree of dissatisfaction with iPowerweb. I have a dedicated server that malfunctioned on Sunday. My site has been down for almost 48 hours. All tech support can ever say is that they have sent a ticket to their 'SBC' group and they will get to it as fast as they can. 2 days and I don't even know if my data is still there. Absolutely unbelievable. If you have any kind of web site that cannot be offline for days awaiting support DO NOT use iPowerweb. Period.
— hseldon · 2006-06-21 09:37
I hear ya, man... iPowerweb has been a disaster for me. I check almost every other day to see if my site is up or not. It's often down. When I contact them, the support is often rude and not knowledgable of the server's status. Often one support person will say one thing while another says something completely different later... it's very maddening.

The online chat support is even worse. I'm getting rid of iPowerweb ASAP and going to try and find another web host that actaully cares at least a little bit about their customers. Anyone who uses iPowerweb will eventually be dissapointed one way or another.

They have wasted so much of my time with lengthy hold times that the money I could have made in the meantime could have been spent on a dedicated server with a quality company! They are a SCAM. iPowerweb might go out of business too... then you'll suddenly have your site go dark and I seriously doubt they'll give any refunds or assist you in any way. They seem to actaully resent their own customers.

NO MORE, iPowerweb... I am done getting scammed by YOU. I would join a class-action lawsuit against them in a heartbeat.
— Cowicide · 2006-12-12 15:51
I hate ipowerweb. I moved to media temple after my database connection kept on getting dropped. They said that the problem must be with another user on the grid (shared hosting sucks period) and that someone had managed to configure the mysql to allow more connections to their site, while sucking connections from mine. That is like saying "Please Please eat up my bullshit" - I wouldn't buy it for a second. Unless that user had full shell access to the mysql, which you don't get on shared servers, there is no way to configure what they were talking about. I have been with them for 3 years, have around 30 clients on them, and now they are beginning to fall apart from the inside out. They are like a worn out car, it needs to be replaced, and that means all the servers, generators, and the team of IT workers, who are out on cigarette breaks while my site goes down. After one huge news release about a clients site back around a year ago, the server happened to go down for the whole weekend after the article came out. They said "We are doing just the best we can, but unfortunately it will take around 48 hours to get the site back online" - I.E. someone couldn't find the god damn reboot button on the server to get it back online. I have gotten so much shit from them in the past, lies, etc, and the vDeck blows. It takes older sites, i.e. 3 years plus around 15 attempts to access the vDeck, if your a web developer reading this, think about crunch time when you are having to access your database through the vDeck, I had to just end up making a shortcut to PhpMyAdmin and literally by-pass the vDeck all together. I am now on a dedicated server over at MediaTemple and so far so good.
— scott · 2007-02-24 05:12
scott, you are correct. Every disatisfied customer will tell 10 or even more people about the bad experience. So do you and I. I won't use ipowerweb any more. I am moving all my sites from that server to somewhere else.
— Jian Shuo Wang · 2007-02-25 22:53
ipowerweb is the worst. Been with them 3 years...dedicated server. HORRIBLE tech support. As of today I can not access my server via FTP...everything else is working fine. 4 hours so far working with the tech support guys and all they can think to do is to restart my server which does not resolve the problem.

So, I'll find another company, migrate everything there and then tell ipowerweb to *uck off!

BTW - I'm a Mac specialist and do a tremendous amount of online work with many - many companies so please don't think I'm a just a angry beginner to the game.

Best,

rw

IPowerWeb Sucks big time. I called them to update my billing information and they assured me everything was in order. 5 days later and my website is still off-line. Losing lots of business now. I called back and they said it was a technical issue. Next day I got an email saying it was a billing issue. I called billing back and they tell me something else. IPowerWeb will create Night Mares for your onlien business. Stay away unless you like to get fucked in the ass by Big Bubba!
— Joe Griffins · 2007-07-21 22:50
Ipower SUCKS! They pressure sold my father into buying a website package that he did not need and then never built the site. $1700.00 He is out. He has been trying to get the money for over a year. F------ CROOKS!
— Phat Tony · 2007-08-24 07:53

Post your iPower horror stories at http://ipowercomplaints.com/

iPower has a privacy/security issue whereupon a hacker can gather its customer's email addresses. Crazy stuff.

I'm glad i found these forums i'm still waiting on my site to go live..Since they are planning on doing nothing i switching to morydomains.com
— amber · 2008-01-19 12:37
Stay away from Ipower Web. They have horrible customer service. Do not waste your time or money on this company!
— Jon Voxin · 2008-03-12 23:51
Well i just read some of these posts from '2004 and here it is '2008 and they still suck. Tried to install osdate fifty times and contacted tech support at least 5. Have one of the author's login to my control panel and still had no clue where the php paths are really set. Even ftp'ing a php script to show paths it's a real nightmare. These people are so stupid after chatting the last time the tech said "well you should contact your webmaster". I said well idiot should i contact myself? These people have no clue how to run a server. The domain on one server, mysql database on another server, php on another server which is unknown. And when you a user is logged into the database yet another server.

So i abandoned the idea for the moment with osdate and tried dolphin software. This program's install is much more sophisticated showing all the parameters on install and editable. Only error i got was the path to php. I ran the php script and got the path and verified it with ipower techs. I retyped the same path in the install script and it took. On the third page of the install it timed out just like osdate install. And no errors in the log file. Obviously the path is incorrect or lost because of their paths keep changing or redirected to other servers and timed out. I give up with this host. Talking with idiots when you call or chat with them. Do yourself a favor and forget them.

Go here and check out a better hosting company as I did.
