On this page, you will see the photos of almost all Starbucks in Shanghai. I personally visited all of them in a day.
I mentioned that I want to go to all the Starbucks stores in Shanghai by walk. I am doing it today – I visited 12 stores of all the 27 hotels I know so far. Here are some pictures. It is not in particular order. I will take some time to modify this entry to add more comments on the location, comments and names to these pictures. Now I need to go to bed…

Visit All Starbucks By Walk
I wrote the Article Starbucks in Shanghai on May 20 this year, It was just after SARS. I had a pleasant talk with Karine from Finland in the Starbucks Metro Tower Store. “I suddenly realize I need to turn my focus back to the amazing city itself instead of watching SARS everyday – the nice life will begin again.” I wrote.
Also, I happened to have visited Winter’s Starbucks Everywhere site. Winter’s goal is to visit every Starbucks Store in the World and at the time I check his website again today, he has visited 3686 North American stores and 114 British stores. It is amazing! So obviously inspired by Winter, I was planning my visit to all the 22 Starbucks Stores in Shanghai. The plan was to complete the tour at the beginning of June, but was postponed till today. I’d like to thank Winter for the great idea.
Then what is my own propose to visit all the stores? Why is it meaningful?
This brings another interesting project called Degree Confluence Project. “The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. The pictures and stories will then be posted on the website.”
So combine these two ideas together, I think it will be interesting to take Starbucks Stores as sample place in Shanghai. By putting these sample point together, it comes out a picture of the whole city. Starbucks management staff must have done a lot of work to choose the best place to open their stores. By following the stores of Starbucks, one can has a tour to see the most modern, attractive, prosperity side of the city. Yes. It is true!
Note: The following comments (“The best.. etc”) is based on my current incomplete tour of the Starbucks stores in Shanghai. It is subject to change in the future. The Best View means the best view in all the Starbucks stores in Shanghai, not world wide. :-)
Starbucks with Best View – People’s Park Store
My friend Patrick once told me that the Bin Jiang Store was awarded the best view of all Starbucks store around the world. This was not the first time I heard of this. However, if I am the judge, I will definitely choose the People’s Park Store of Starbucks.
The People’s Park Store is Located in exactly the central of Shanghai – either in terms of distance to the government building, which is a most common way of the concept of “Central” in China cities, or in terms of the geographic central. The base point of land measure is in the International Hotel, or Park Hotel, which is only 200 meters away. :-)
It is beside the People’s Park and the Shanghai Art Museum. It is also an (almost) stand alone building with to stories. It has a nice big first floor and a large gazebo on the second floor. From there, you can see the beautiful tower of the Shanghai Art Museum. See people below:
Also, the building is surrounded with the People’s Park and you can take your Coffee and step into the grass land of the Park.
Above: The consistent Starbucks style counter of the People’s Square Store.
Near Metro: B – within 2-minute walk to the nearest Metro Exit
Stand Alone Building: B – A stand alone building shared with another one store
Scene: A – Very good view without obvious shootcomings.
Starbucks with Chinese Style – Yu Yuan Store
Yuan Yuan is the only store in Shanghai, I have to say, with strong Chinese style. The reason I followed all the Starbucks in Shanghai is, all the Starbucks stores are located in the business centers in Shanghai. However, there are two exceptions. One is the Yuyuan Store and the other is the Qibao Store. The areas are crowded and there are no business people there.
It is clear that the major customer segment for the Yu Yuan Store are foreign tourists. It is also the smallest Starbucks Store in Shanghai with only 9 seats or so. I had a hard time to find the store in the Yu Yuan area. Finally, it show up in the opposite side of the famous Jiu Qu Bridge. Yes. It is the heart of Yu Yuan Garden Area.
Near Metro: D – no Metro access
Stand Alone Building: C – no stand alone building but with a stand alone shop venue
Scene: C – Interesting view but either crowded or dirty
Xin Tian Di Store
Xin Tian Di is the place of all kinds of Bars and western Restaurants. It is for sure that Starbucks will reserve its place there. Built in a Shanghai old style house, the Xin Tian Di Store fits into city very well.
Below is the standard name plate for all the restaurants/bars/cafes in Xin Tian Di. I like the simple design.
Below: The seats are always occupied. The Tai Cang Road by the seats are considered the entrance to the great area.
Below: The famous Starbucks Logo on the typical Shanghai gray brick wall…
Below: The house of Starbucks.
I would like to recommend everyone to visit this store and take a seat on the second floor. The wood stair and the decro insdie reminds people of the old times of Shanghai.
Near Metro: c – within 10-minute walk to the nearest Metro Exit (Metro South Huang Pi Rd. Station)
Stand Alone Building: B – A stand alone building shared with another one store
Scene: B – Good but no particular view of interest
Lippo Store
Moving eastward along the Huai Hai Road from the Zhong Huan and Xin Tian Di Store, we get to the Lippo Tower Store. Just like many other simliar stores, it is located inside a top office building – the Lippo Tower.
I like the starbucks on Zunyi Road in Hongqiao Area best. It’s a standalone whitehouse, more like american style, the cozy atmosphere with the large space between tables.
The worst is the one opposite to the Partkson. It’s so crowded as a markets :S
i’ve never been a starbucks in my life. i hate coffee. the only drink i like is cuppacino. you can get really cheap and great tasting ones from the gas station. that’s the one i love. i don’t see the point of paying so much for stupid drinks. i’ve been java house here and didn’t enjoy it. almost 10 years in a small urban city totally changed me. the way some people in shanghai spends money just gives me chill. i was born and raised in shanghai but i can no longer relate much with the city people when i went two years ago besides the fact i loved the shopping and food.
just uploaded 2 photos of the starbucks on Zunyi Road.

I love the starbucks’ way to decorate. Last time when i went to Beijing, I see a very chinese styled starbucks house in houhai, it’s quite attractive.
the picture is here http://img1.photo.163.com/aprilsakura/543206/4369470.jpg
jianshuo, recommend http://www.fotopages.com/ to save and blogging your photos with timestamp.
I like the one at the bund, near Shangarila hotel, especialy in the night.
Wow. So many comments in one day! Let me answer one by one.
Tutu, I didn’t visit one of the three Starbucks in the Hong Qiao Area yet. i am planning to visit the Zun Yi Rd. store within one week. The pictures you took are nice!
Dodo, for Starbucks, I believe the venue – the store and the chairs, the lights and the smell of coffee – is more important than the coffee itself. I do have friend who will frequently visit coffee shop and cannot hold for even one minute when he wants to go, just like the rushing to a W.C., but I am not of that type. Often, it is just a good meeting place and talking venue in this city – better than KFC and better than parks.
hi Jianshuo, didn’t u think the starbucks becomes more and more noisy? i more prefer some other places now, like the coffee bean. But i like starbucks coffee, it tastes nicer.
Last time when I went to Hangzhou with my friend, we see quite good places around the west lake. not the xihu xintiandi, but right side.
This is a great project! I really enjoy these kinds of collections of places. It’s too bad all of the confluences around Shanghai have already been visited, but I may have a chance to hit one in Yunnan during New Year.
By the way, a new Starbucks opened in my office building recently, and I can’t find it on their website. There’s no sign for it on the outside of the building, but it’s in Hongqiao, Shanghaimart (世贸商城, 2299 Yan’An Rd) on the first floor. If you go to the Zunyi Rd Starbucks, it’s about a 10 minute walk away.
Yes. The only degree confluence in Shanghai has been visited. There is only two points in Zhe Jiang and no point in Jiang Su is visited. It may be a good idea to go there.
Thanks Brad for the ShanghaiMart store. I will visit it later. It is not advertised any where.
starbucks is one of the worst coffee shops in the world, it is the McDonald’s in coffee business; simply in terms of coffee quality, it is extremely strong, acidic and not always fresh; i don’t understand why so many chinese people dig into it. Try avoid it at all time. If Carribou’s is available in China, try it.
Hi!! 我隨便在網路上亂晃,晃到你的網站的.我很喜歡你拍的Starbucks的照片,想請問你可不可以寄一些Starbucks的photo給我?? 我知道很突然,非常不好意思and非常感激!!

100% agreement, I also don´t understand why it´s so big in the States, it simply seems to be a matter of advertisement. I remember together with a friend from Hungary getting extremely expensive coffee at the Starbucks in the San Diego Hilton, after tasting the first drops we both
threw it away!
You can have very strong and stimulating coffee that is neither acidlike and bitter, but not at Starbucks….
I guess it’s just trendy to “be spotted” at Starbucks.
I’ve only been at one in Hangzhou, and that was not any special experience, exept for my wallet ;-)
Wake up now guys, instead of complaining others habits,
go and make your own GOOD TASTE coffeeshop !
Starbucks sucks at making good coffee, why JS being so obsessed with it? even Tim Hortons makes better coffee
maybe not very Chinese people know the what the real good-quality coffee tastes like, so they just follow the trend and “welcome” stabucks alot
Good frsh-ground coffee-beans are extremely expensive in China.
So give the instant coffee a try !
Buy some Nestlé Gold instant coffee (49-60 RMB/100 grams), it lasts for many cups.
You can make it as strong as you like, but at first begin with a half teaspoonful in a medium sized cup. This is pure BLACK coffee.
If you don´t like this (as most asians don’t) put some sugar (as little as possible, but enough to give you a satisfying taste), and milk.
The milk should be added as the last thing, as it cools down the coffee.
Make it a light brown color, not white, then there’s no coffe taste left.
Another way to add the “milk” taste is to use instant creamy powder; the “Coffee-mate” is good.
The advantages of using instant coffee and creamy powder are, that they don’t get old as quickly as real coffee and milk, and the taste is quite acceptable, at least if you compare with Starbucks !
We use the mentioned ingredients all over my danish company’s site offices in Shanghai, and no complaints. Danish people drink A LOT of coffee, so this is to be a highly experienced choice !

If I can find the right sugar in Shanghai, I will revert later to give a recipy of good “Irish Coffee”, which I never found satisfying in any restaurants or bars in Shanghai.
This is in fact a drink, but have a lot of coffee in it.
Starbucks is the great at Latte’s (you know the $4.00 a cup) but alot of times little stores have better COFFEE like “Small World Coffee” in Princeton NJ if you like coffee like I do stop here for a cup you will be happy you did.
Just of our curiosity, exactly how much does a cup of coffe cost in China (i.e. grande Latte)? I’m sure the prices are varied slightly depending the city and at each location, but do you think it costs less compared to other coffee shops (chains or individually owned)?
Is Starbucks using domestically grown coffee in China? If they did then they would be able to keep the costs down. Also, are all of the beverages, foods (pastries, sandwiches, etc…), and products the same as what’s being sold in its cafes in Seattle or are they offering different things that are more specialized to their Chinese customers?
Has Starbucks done anything different (i.e. marketing)to try to get more of the older generations to eat there? b/c it seems like people in their 20’s and 30’s are the main demographic (from looking at the pictures). Thanks! (btw, I like your site:)
Most of Starbucks here are too noisy. So I prefer CoffeeLox. Drinking coffee is not really enjoyable, seeing girls is. This is the dark side of the men in Starbucks. Ladies be careful of eyes behind sunglasses.
