SARS is almost over, so I begin to visit coffee shops and meet friends. Tonight, I had a nice talk with Karine in the Starbucks in the Metro City in Xujiahui. I suddenly realize I need to turn my focus back to the amazing city itself instead of watching SARS everyday – the nice life will begin again.
Starbucks is Part of People’s Life
Source: Jian Shuo Wang’s All Starbucks Tour In A Day
With more and more foreign companies coming to Shanghai, the daily life changes. If you list some shops that affects the city most, I would list in the following order:
- McDonald’s, KFC
- IKEA
- Carofour
- Starbucks
The most important reason it is affecting people’s life is the life style and the concept they bring to the city. People know how fast a lunch will be and how colorful and creative the furniture can be. We all learn how large amount shopping looks like and, for the Starbucks case, how relaxing it is to have a cup of coffee.
Wireless Starbucks
Today, I found three laptop computers in the Starbucks in Metro City at 7:00 PM. I even see the girl sitting besides me are surfing on the Internet. The homepage of Yahoo! appeared on her laptop – it is cool! The Tian Yi Tong really works. Fortunately, I have subscribed and I can enjoy the wireless Starbucks very soon. (I said very soon, instead of now because it takes 4 working days before the Tian Yi Tong is enabled).
Here is the list (in Chinese) of Tian Yi Tong covered Starbucks on 51wireless.com. It obviously is not the most updated information since Starbucks Metro City Shop is not in the list but is covered already.

How Many Starbucks in Shanghai
It is an interesting question. I want to know the answer too. It has at least 18 shops. I am interesting to present a review for the Starbucks shops. I am planning to buy a digital camera within this week, so I believe I can warlk around and visit all the Starbucks shop and take a picture for each of them. Yes. I will do it within two weeks.
Actually, the reason I thought of this idea is because of SARS – indirectly related to SARS. During the long May holiday, we cannot go any where and it seems too dangerous to take taxi, buses, or metro. So I begin to walk. After the practice, I found I can walk much further than I can imagine. I usually take taxi or metro to work but recently, I will walk for one hour everyday from my office to my home. That is the reason I believe I can visit all the Starbucks by walk – it may take serveral days to do it.

Update June 1, 2003
I have postponed my plane to visit all Starbucks to the end of June since the new DC I bought is not available for the first part of the month.
Interesting to read
The slight change of Starbucks logo.
My digital camera
More than one reader have requested Shanghai pictures. Yes. A picture tells more than a thousand words. I am considering buying digital camera serious to capture this fast changing city.
I have been very keen to Sony DSC P-8.
But after I found it has no manual function, I turned to Nikon Coolpix 885. Later, I locked to Nikon Coolpix 4300, which is about 3800 RMB now.
Starbucks — my favorite store. In Silicon Valley, where some towns have two Starbuck stores, people give directions by it, as in go straight and turn left at the SECOND Starbucks.
There are 67 Starbucks in China. There is even a Starbucks inside The Forbidden City in Beijing! The last time I was in Shanghai, I tried to visit a DIFFERENT Starbuck each time I had a chance. :-) There are 26 in Shanghai, so I still have a long, long way to go.
Since the invention of product placement (i.e. BMW in Jame Bond films), you see a lot of Starbucks in major Hollywood movies. It was featured prominently in > at the beginning. There was a line spoken by Tom Hanks,
“The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don’t know what the hell they’re doing or who on earth they are, can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall! Decaf! Cappuccino!”
If you have seen >, Ashley Judd was driving by a small town in Colorado and she made a U-turn right in front of a Starbucks… I am sure it was all filmed in California, probably at the studio… Anyway, try and see if you can spot all the product placements the next time you see a blockbuster film — Matrix 2 anyone?
Missing film title:
Starbucks was featured prominently in “You’ve Got Mail (1997)” A movie featuring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, its advertising sponsors included AOL (obviously) and Starbucks, among others.
So how would one go about getting wireless access at one of the Starbucks? If I read that correctly on 51wireless.com, there is an option for unlimited connection at public places for 150 RMB a month?
What if I were just visiting Shanghai for a week or two? Is there any way for me to get access without a lengthy registration process?
Thanks,
Johnny
Johnny, for Tian Yi Tong users, since it is required to use the 150 RMB for whole month package, there is no addtional fee. According to their website, when you visit any of the webpage, it just ask you to input username and password. Then you can surf the net. I will personal confirm it when I visit Starbucks next time.
I asked the Shanghai telecom call center. They said they don’t have some prepaid card or something for your to void the long registration process. But drop me a mail when you come, let me see if I can help you on that when you come.
Luo:
Yes. Starbucks is an interesting shop – I am going to visit the 26 shops in Shanghai and post pictures of them. For the product in film, I just want to see the film “You’ve got mail” again to see how Starbucks appeared in the film – I just don’t have any impression now.
Yo jian shuo Wang,
I have received your e-mails for some weeks now and I am really happy about your information. The different subjects – SARS, Shanghai, Starbucks – make your site vey pleaseant to read.
I am coming to Shanghai in September, I am doing research then for a Dutch building-company. I am very excited about Shanghai and that is why I contact you.
I hope you can provide me with more information next months.
Good like with your wireless world!
Many greetings from the Netherlands!

Buying a digital camera is a good idea. Just my 2 cent for your consideration: Personally, I believe Nikon and Canon are two safe bet. Canon G2, EOS 10D and Nikon Coolpix series are all exciting toys, while Sony is so-so. I have a fuji 4800, good looking and easy-to-use; but I still wish to have a ‘more serious’ camera.
Anyway, there are many digital camera review and discussion everywhere. Good luck.
Jian shuo wang,
Wow. Jichuanyouli, I am moved by your friends but still curious about how he made it. I would be more interested to know more about him. Let me know what I can do to help him if I can.
Thijs, thanks for your comment.

Nice shots and moving articles. Thanks for sharing.
Since I will go back to Shanghai in another three weeks. I will just go and buy the starbucks coffee from every single Starbucks in Shanghai. -_-;; I love starbucks so much. Thank you for offer me the addresses, but I also have question for the price starbucks coffee in Shanghai. My mom says it will be much more expensive than the price in America. If someone can find out the price for me, it will be a big help for me. thanx!
I don’t know the price of Starbucks in U.S. It was a shame for me not to go to a Starbucks even I visit Seattle, the hometown for some time.
In Shanghai, the average price for a cup of coffee is about 20-30 RMB (3-4 USD). I don’t have a complete list though.
hi! iam thinking about buying a digicam in china – does it make sense? iam german and e.g. the casio exilim costs about 270euros = 270 USD here in germany. i heard glasses are cheap in shanghai – is that true? could you comment on the sars-situation in shanghai? friends told me going out is difficult due to sars…
thanx for your answer, greetings from good ol germany
andreas
Andreas,
SARS is over in Shanghai. http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/20030603_sars_is_over_in_shanghai_ii.htm
You can check more updated inforamtion on SARS in my SARS category. http://home.wangjianshuo.com/archives/categories/sars.htm
It may make sense to buy glasses – the lense in China since it is cheaper. To buy a ditigal camera and other digital stuff like walkman, China may not be as cheap as Japan.
I happened to read this article, because i’m wondering how many starbucks in shanghai now.anyway,it gives me some important information.i think i’ll often visit here and read more and more good article
:-)
Hi there!
I recently moved to Shanghai and pestered the building management to get Tianyitong in my apartment. On the first visit, the telecom techs just brought over an ADSL modem and made out no-one had asked for the wireless set-up.
Then, after much hassle, they returned abotu a week later with the wireless router/AP (a Beyondcable 2010). Via the building management, I tried to question them as to what Username/password I would need to use to get wireless access while out and about in Shanghai.
at first, there was lots of shoulder shrugging and then they just pointed to my original ADSL user card (with Username/password on it).
Sure enough, when I took my palm-based wireless device (an Alphasmart Dana) to Starbucks, it’d find the access point but wouldn’t log in – it cam up with “wrong user name or password”).
Any suggestions on how I can resolve this? The Sh telecom Tanyitong site is in Chinese (which I can’t read) and I suspect I wouldn’t get very far if I rang them up (I’m also not much good with spoken Chinese).
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
Regards,
Bluebag

ah… you all seem infatuated with Starbucks!! Also, that guy, the one who posted that random letter, seems really messed up. Don’t listen to him, anyone.
