Regarding this virus, the good news is, http://home.no.net is down now and this helps to slow down the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, I found eTrust anti-virus can detect the virus and mark it as Fleming.A.Worm.

Regarding your quesiton about language this blog is using, it is an FAQ. I enjoy sharing ideas and though with people anywhere in this world. Language is only the tool. We are reading internationally, we are talking about events that happens internationally - like this virus, I need to be able to read and UNDERSTOOD by other people. Does current version of Movable Type support Asian language?

By default, MovableType does not support Chinese. The comment system support all languages since it stores the Chinese characters using Unicode code encoder - &xxxxx;

For blog entries, it seems MovableType can support Chinese character in its body, but not title. It will encode the title for the second time based on the garbage codes so make it totally unreadable.

The problem can be easily fixed using the steps outlined below:

As for the above-mentioned virus, it could be programmed easily, as there are already documents and sample programs to manipulate MSN Messenger objects, even from Windows Host Scripts, I think.

Yes. It is very easy to build a script to control the messenger. It is easy but now it seems dangerous. I believe the reason why MSN Messenger team exposes this interface is because of the Microsoft tradition - to build a platform to make the developers' work easier instead of creating an application. This has been clearly demostrated during the IE vs Navigator war.

There is no Fun Buddy virus that I am aware of. However there is a Enduser Licence Agreement for those using the Fun Buddy Icons to message their friends with. One paragraph of this licence states:

"Unfortunately, that means that your friends must have the Fun Buddy Icons software in order to see your smileys.

That "funbuddy" thing can be removed by going to add/remove programs and removing "My Web Search Browser".

I have that Buddy Virus as well..Like when im chatting to somebody on MSN, that pops up and i dont even see it. I guess it asks them to take a look at something.

But recently, I can only talk to limited people..and if I stay on MSN too long my comp starts going wild and then somehow..Something sends itself to all my contacts that are online. It like opens a file and then sends to each and everyone one. But most of them decline it I think. Then after that, I can't talk to anyone in an open window.

Last night, I had this message pop up on NOTEPAD and it said something about a LARISSA and being a noob, and something about S-K-Y-D-E-V-I-L.

I have no idea who Larissa is OR Skydevil. Please give me s0me advice if you can help, this is driving me nuts.

The virus is called Win32.HLLW.Skydevil, it shuts down a most known anti viruses and spyware programs and Ctrl-Alt-Del is disabled. It also shuts down system restore, which is in the procedure which Symantec have said to remove the virus! so anyone got any bright idea im all out. *ps when i say shuts down i mean it closes the program instanly as you open it*

You guys are all n00bs. Seriously. All you need to do is run AVG, and Norton, and see what they find. If nothing, it's just spyware. You can get rid of it with Spybot or Ad-Aware. If it's not that either, send Symantec.com the link, and they'll make something for it. If they get enough requests, that is.

Go into the system registry and delete the nessasery stuff. Run virus and spyware scans. There will be tutorials telling you what to delete from the sys reg somewhere on the internet. Google it ;)

I have the Larissa virus, fuckin n00b all that shit. I have attempted to remove the program several times. I had it before then a computer programmer wiped our computer and it was fine with msn 7.0. As soon as I downloaded msn 7.5 the problem started re-occuring when I try to log on I get the error code 80048883, and when I goto troubleshoot it says there is a problem with the key-ports. If anyone knows an approach to removing this virus please help. The links above I couldnt get to because it woudl shut down explorer everytime I clicked them.

Same here, my sister got a pop-up at msn saying she could download a new version of msn, so she did. Now the bloody thing won't connect anymore. Which is kind of strange given the fact that we already had msn 7.5 running on our computer, and it was doing fine before she downloaded this update.

I just saved myself the trouble and used system restore back to yesterday. Everything's fine now. Certainly won't make that mistake again.

I have the same problems. Mine started when my Webcam wouldn't work with YAHOO MSG. Now it won't sign in. THen I downloaded the new MSN and it does the same thing as yall except it says something about a firewall. My XP firewall is turned off and I don't have NORTON anymore. Also I can't restore since for some reason it was turned off! HELP!

Exactly same thing here. I downloaded the " new msn " which is 7.5 .. but i already have 7.5 anyways. So i could of did what John did by restoring it. But stupid me I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it and the same thing happend again. And it says i need to do something with my firewall but i dont even have a firewall? I REALLY WANT MY MSN BACK !! Please help.

Install msn 7.0 instead....

I upgraded my 7.5 and the same problem like yours accured.

I reinstalled it without any luck, but I had the MSN 7.0 install file.

Now I've installed it and it works. So until Live messenger will come, maybe you should use 7.0 instead.

Rose - you can download messenger 7.0 from the windows download centre. Go to google and type in windows download centre and then on the right hand side it says somehing about families click MSN and then the MSN messenger tab and form there you can downoad it. Hope this helps

That's what i'm gonna do, i will download the MSN 7.0 then, but the weirdest of things is that the error 80048883 only happens in my session but not in my husband's session, really weird.

No matter how many times i unistall it and re install it it will give me the same error, and when i'm trying to type in my email adrees it gets stuck and minutes later it will let me write another part of the email..it takes so looong and then the error pops up. And it tells me that i am NOT connected to net passport wich is not true.

The www.checkmessenger.net site was probably a phishing scam, to harvest passwords to Hotmail accounts. It shut down in the last few days. I actually emailed MSN to please check it out - by the next day it had been shut down.

to get rid of the virus try and do a system restore i did this and my computer is working fine

Well, that's bad. These are usually programs that run at startup and are hidden. They will not show on the Programs-> startup menu, since the instructions are usually on the registry. These programs are the ones who send those messages. To get rid of them, you must search the internet for any home-made removal tools, or, if you're daring, run regedit and go to the Localmachine->software->microsoft->windows->currentversion->run registry key and search and delete the offensive program. Of course, this HAS to be done under safe mode. Most programs re-add the registry key if they detect that it was deleted, and safe mode does not run any programs, so, that's the best way to nullify it. Then just search for the file and delete it.

I am not responsible for any damage done to your computer by following these instructions. Editing the registry is serious stuff and you should only do it after making a restore point.

I face the same thing as Simon (below). When i sign in my msn, in 3 seconds the window will automatically close by itself and whenever i move my mouse to the msn icon on the bottom right of my screen, it disappears. I've got the same one, got sent a .zip file from a collegue, opened the file and suddenly my MSN messenger's trying to send it to everyone in my address book.. it opens all my online messenger contacts and asks them to download the file. How do you get rid of it? I'm running Spybot at the moment, have also run AdawareSE. I need a no cost fixit option. And I don't have an antivirus.

Hello. I just got some dumb virus which is like wad janus said. a pic.zip file which i was stupid enuff to download from a fellow fren who also has e virus... i tried almost everything. Virus scans to deleting all my received files and repairing my msn. It sends the file to all contacts even when u appear offline on msnger and is spreading very fast casue it write s not too to make ppl believe it not a virus. I have deleted all my unknown zip files and i suspect it unpacks in a different name.

Hi there! The following procedures worked for me, when AntiVirus and AntiSpyware software didn't work.

Read it before you try it..

MSN Messenger virus:

1 - stop and unninstall msn messenger

2 - press CTRL+ALT+DEL -> stop all 'unknown' or 'weird' processes. If not sure, just type the name of the process on Google to know if it is a virus, adware or spyware

3 - Start -> Run -> msconfig -> startup -> uncheck all boxes without any name or description and other 'weird' processes. If not sure, check the path of the process and/or search on Google. Take note of the files and folders that you find out that belong to virus, etc. Press OK. This will keep unchecked processes from starting with Windows. Don't restart.

4 - donwload and run Eusing Registry Cleaner or other Registry Cleaner software. Delete all issues found.

5 - restart Windows in Safe-Mode (press F8 - I think..). If still present, delete the files and that you took note of in step 3

6 - restart Windows normally. A window will appear saying that some changes were made (on step 3). Uncheck the box and press OK

7- donwload and re-install msn messenger

ATTENTION:

- be carefull not to delete any 'good' file..if not sure, use Google :)

- this is what I do to deal with nasty spyware and adware that infect my computer. sometimes it's more difficult, requiring the download of special tools ,mostly available in antivirus software websites like Panda, Norton, etc..

I got this one virus from my friend and it said ":p lol you HAVE to look at this" and so I thought Nothing of it and accepted what he sent me and then I opend it up and it was like a little zipped folder and I noticed nothing happend when I opend it. So a little while later it started sending messages to everyone in my contact list. Even the blocked people. And When my virus is sending people stuff, It won't let me talk to them and tell them its a virus so I have to sign off and by the time I get back on they have it. Whenever i open messenger, it displays spanish and english, mostly spanish. I do not speak spanish and would like my whole entire messenger to be in ENGLISH PLEASE! Hi, I have a friend who has a virus and what the virus does is it signs them on automaticaly, sends everybody on their buddy list this: "http://www.vvkoxhno.info :D" and it then signs them off, I'm just wondering if anybody can perhaps provide me with the answer as to how to fix it I have a shrewd idea on how to fix it but because I don't have the virus myself I can't very well "experiment" with it, all I know is that the link that the person gives out has the virus on the site but I believe it's been removed off the site as well as the site is random - you click on the link one day then it could be a ringtone then the next day it could be about estate agents for example, but please if anybody knows how to fix this then please tell me how to then you can find me on check9999mate@hotmail.com - thanks in advance

Hi, I've been able to fix the problem - it was caused by the person giving away their MSN password away at the site - if you have this problem then change the password

I downloaded msn messenger but every time I try to open it I get a message that says 'Microsoft has closed this program.' And then a small box at the lower right hand corner tells me something about Data Execution Prevention. Help!

Hey Donna, try re-installing MSN - it sounds as if a virus\program editted MSN and so Microsoft is blocking it, if this doesen't solve your problem then got to this site: http://webmessenger.msn.com/ and then add me, my MSN is: check9999mate@hotmail.com

the site is a MSN webmessenger which is the same as windows live messnger but in a web browser, I hope this fixes your problem

I want to do a restore on my computer but, it keeps telling me that there is an Error and all the setting didn't change. What could be causing this error? I've tried many times. The same results every time. I also; followed the directions.

Hi Maria, it sounds as if system restore has decided to stop working for you - this happens to the best of us, about the only way that you can fix this problem is by using the Vista disc that was provided (boot up from the DVD, repair option and then system restore) but the chances are that somthings gone onto your PC and so stopped System restore thus if the restore doesen't work from the disc then I would recomend to start a fresh - save out what you want to keep, boot up from the disc and then re-install Vista

For most of your MSN Problems, I'd suggest doing a ONLINE SCAN which this virus will hopefully not close.

Also you can try:

--- Just look at the "Best Answer" part,The instructions there are the same ones for Windows XP. This wil not work with Windows NT,2000,98 SE, 98,95 etc.

~If a System Repair Installation does not work back up valuable data and back it up onto CDs and DVDs then re-install Windows. Formatting your Hard Drive before a Clean re-install of windows would be best.

Hi Sabine, did you by any chance enter in your MSN password on a site which claims that it can check if someone has deleted you - if so change it and your problems will cease, if on the other hand you haven't then see if you can do a system restore then hopefully that will sort your problem out, it can be located in: Start, All programs, Acessories, System tools and then system restore.

@skye, next time those requests apprear, you just need to tick the 'block' checkbox and click the 'ok' button, by which those requests will never ever appear again. LOL! I've ever done that, and it really works, so just have a try.

Hey, yesterday i signed in to windows live messenger and it popped up telling me off the newer version so i clicked to download it....once it had downloaded i signed in but all my contacts had gone! It will not let me add anyone saying that they are not using messenger yet. Has this happened to everyone when downloading the newest version or just me? :(
