I am happy to receive a new laptop Dell Latitude D600. It is larger than my previous one - Dell Latitude C400. This is the third Dell laptop I used:

The laptop become senior as I am growing to senior. :-D

Dell Latitude D600

This is a nice one. I don't have time to check the details of this laptop yet. Here are some facts about it I discovered immediately after I get it.

Intel Centrino Mobile Technoloy

Since there is a Centrino logo on the right corner of the keyboard, I know it comes with built-in wireless network adaptor. So I am able to start the laptop for the first time in my bed room and it automatically connects to my Wireless AP and accesses to Internet via my FTTB+LAN from Shanaghai telecom. Oh. I love wireless. My wireless dream finally comes true.

Intel Pentium M Processor

It reads as Intel (R) Pentium (R) M proccessor 1600 MHz.

Other

1 G Memory + 55G Disk + DVD ROM / CDRW

Screen

It has a large 17' LCD screen. It looks so nice after I get used to the small 14' Latitude C400 screen.

Blue Tooth

There is a blue tooth indicator besides the disk, power indicator. It seems it support Bluetooth. I assume the blue tooth module is not included by default. So my laptop is still not bluetooth enabled.

Conclusion

I am excited about this new laptop. I can run complicated Virtual PC images on this laptop, including running a large domain with three domain controllers and Exchange Servers on the same laptop. Bravo!

WJS,

Conrgrats on the new Laptop. I myself have the next model, the D800. I am quite hapy with it. I also have the wireless and bluetooth options. I use it to do all my graphic and CAD visualizations. It is that fast, and the graphics are that good ;-)

i have always been an ibm thinkpad fan myself. currently am using a t30 for the past two years and it still serves me well. bluetooth and wifi built in.

thinkpad rulez man.

I am using Dell latitude as well, and my wife is using ThinkPad, I agree ThinkPad is more durable than Dell, I have changed battery once, cable once. While Dell seems more friendly towards Linux than IBM, I am daul-booting with Win2k and Mandrake on my Dell.

Posted by: zhang on July 10, 2004 6:48 PM

mw, you're right. I have a Thinkpad A31p, this is my best "friend" ever !
1GB mem, super top fast graphics 1600x1200, SVHS in and out, Bluetooth (good with my my Nokia 6230), FireWire, and 70MB HD. Capable of running UG 3D prof. CAD software directly.

BUT - TOO HEAVY !
I carry it to work and back every day and I have to use a backpack to stand the 3.8 kg's....

Hi, nice laptop i checked it out on dell.com. I just got a thinkpad T40 for myself the other month. Within a week a got my notebook infected with a few virussus, damn. But the notebook itself is great a side from too little memory. I just love the wireless features.

carsten

yeah, the A & R series are rather heavy. that is why i have always chosen the Ts. before that i was using the 570 which was pretty good too. my kid is using that now.

lee, with the world it is now, virus checkers and defensive computing is a must. also set for windows to receive all updates. some of these updates are critical to protecting your system. in fact, am seriously considering that my next thinpad should be linux driven. sorry JS, microsoft should do a better job in protecting their users. i know that they try but ...

what i understand from ibmers, linux installs really well on thinkpad with all the required drivers etc. thinkpad with linux and open office (www.openoffice.org) should be a killer comibination. the only thing that is keeping me back is that i have outlook synched with my SE P900. there seems to be no available synch program with any linux based pim :(

Posted by: mw on July 11, 2004 11:13 AM

mw, I am not really a geek guy, but check out this website for your SE P900:

I started using Linux on Dell Laptop back in 1997, quite happy with it. IBM and Compaq seem to all have something "their-own"(reserved tiny system partition, PCMCIA card, video card), it is much better nowdays though. while Dell, due to its heavy OEM, is better suported by Linux programmer.

Posted by: zhang on July 13, 2004 4:36 PM

i use a dell latitude d600 myself - its a great laptop but not very friendly to linux - why? its bios no longer supports APM yet in order to suspend to RAM in the recent kernels (including 2.6), you really need APM. ACPI never works, and i dont see it working in the next 5 years!!! If dell could give APM support in their BIOS, it would be really great for Linux users. Forget swsup in 2.6 kernel, it takes a serious coder to make it work :-(

Hi,
Please i have a DELL D610 laptop. From the device manager, the infra-red has been installed but, it still doesn't work.I tried allocating COM 1 to it and putting off the serial port off but, it still didn't work. I have tried all the COMs but it still didn't work. How can i enable my infra red. I use windows XP

HI all,

The Dell latitudes use a bluetooth chips that clips into the motherboard internally.
It doesn't always come as standard so you may want to check before you buy.

The easiest way to check if your latatude has bluetooth installed is to boot into the bios screen by pressing 'F2' whilst the Dell logo is on the screen buring bootup.

You can disable/enable the bluetooth chip from the bios.

Good Luck!

Hi AMIT,

U can go for DELL customer support for the drivers...i can provide you the direct number if u wish to.

I m having dell lattitude 600 series.
i had graphics and audio problem initially because the drivers were not installed, once i installed them...the things are fine now.

Calling the customer support team wud b a better idea than scratching here n there for drivers...only thing u required is ur service number which u can find on the tag pasted at the back of ur laptop

I have a Dell d600 and the wireless is not working properly. The disk crashed and I had to rebuild from scratch w/XP and drivers downloaded from Dell. I am using the same wireless network as I was before. Not sure what I'm missing. It's finding the network and I have double checked authentication is correct but it's unable to connect (the netgear is not seeing it). Ideas? Was there a certain order I should have installed drivers and patches etc? Dell D600 w/onboard wireless. XPSP2, connecting to Netgear WGT624 Thanks.
