I'm a personal friend of Wang Jian Shuo, in fact, I met him through his wonderful weblog. I occasionally come and visit this website coz it's full of new ideas and perceptions from a unique person.

Most brainiacs are not sociable, most sociable people are not brainiacs. It's hard to find the two traits combined in one person. Jian Shuo is a genius at technology and also a down to earth, trustworthy guy.

What impressed me in the beginning about Jian shuo was that he loved the two extremes. One was "High Tech" , the other was "Nature" I'm sure you can see that if you read carefully over the site, his articles on technology and travel photos which explore fascinating places in China.

This isn't actually a comment it's more of a question but I didn't know where else to send it.

I want to study chinese in China (either Shanghai or Beijing). I want to do some sort of 12 week course then maybe think about staying longer if I like it. I don't know if this is your area of expertise, but you seem to be an authority on most things Shanghai-related. I've not had much luck with Google and I thought maybe you knew of a course that's had good feedback or at least you might know of where to find out about one. Any information would be more useful than what I already have...

I have been in Shanghai since 25 March. I am finding the city very interesting. I am staying at the Yuping Hotel until Thursday then go to a less expensive hotel in Pudong for 3 weeks.

I will be going to trade shows during the next few weeks and also visiting Nanhui to see friends and work on some cultural exchange with officials there.

I am Looking for some good Chinese music to listen to. Perhaps you can post some links to sites that have some authentic (from people/groups/bands in China) Chinese music on them. While in China I received a CD of Dadawa as a parting gift (probably not Party approved material) but very pleasant to listen to. I asked several times if there was any good "true" Chinese music that my guides could recommend, and their answer surprised me. They could not recommend anything that was produced in China, most of the music they listened to was all western bands and singers. I find that hard to believe with thousands of years of history.

1) I'm considering an offer that will relocate my wife and I to Shanghai. She's a little skeptical because we've heard of numerous stories of failed marriage in Shanghai because of the KTV, prostitutions, massages, etc. that exist in China. Can you comment on this for expats?

2) I see that you have MSFT experience. The offer I have is from SAP, do you know their salary structure for manager level? How is SAP viewed in China, etc.?

I think we have met before, or maybe its you name that sounds familier. Actually, i work in T-COMMS Nigeria ltd, a telecomunication company in Nigeria. There was a time we had some problems with our UNIDEN switch in 1999 or so, and the name of the 'Chinese' guy that flew in to fix it was Jian Shuo Wang. i just want to find oout if it was you.

There are some broken links I just noticed. The "About Me" link in the top menu takes one to the home page, not this article. Also, when trying "http://wangjianshuo.com/about/", it lists the contents of the dir, not sure if that's intentional...

I've intstalled perl for windows as well from the same source. I'm new to perl and only need to use it for short scripting tasks (like rearranging the syntax in a file, etc.).

I can get the "example.pl" to run, but other perl scripts that run successfully on linux machines don't work for me. What's the likely problem? Do I need to put them in a particular directory?

Can't figure it out.

I had the wonderful pleasure of visiting Shanghai in January of 2001. What a fantastic city! Prior to going there I had visited Beijing for Christmas. What a study in contrasts. At the time, Beijing smelled of burning coal causing constant eye and lung irritation and I got terribly sick on the vile "friendship" restaurant food our guide steered us toward... and then our stay in Shanghai (at the Pudong Shangri-La hotel) was a complete breath of fresh air. Everything was very modern looking and the city known as the 'Paris of the Orient' certainly lived up to it's billing. Lots of construction at the time gave us the impression of a city being completely reborn. I would love to go there again to see what is new now!

i was wondering if you could give me advice on whether to learn mandarin in beijing or shanghai. i know the basics of mandarin because i'm a filipino-chinese. i studied chinese from grade school to high school. However, the chinese language program in my school did not focus much on the conversational part. we just memorized everything that was written in the book without understanding. i know, not a very effective way of learning a language. And although we speak chinese at home, we use fujianhua because that's the dialect used by most chinese that live here in the philippines.

i know beijing's mandarin is the closer to the standard putonghua but i prefer shanghai because i've already been to beijing twice. one was for a tour and the other was a 6 week study program. my mandarin improved a lot. i can understand basic conversations and i can bargain at the flee market!! hehe.. but i still do have a problem expressing myself in chinese. and when i watch chinse movies, i need to read the chinese subtitles because i can't understand anything when the actors talk too fast. so..with the basic knowledge i have, do you think it's ok for me to go to shanghai to learn mandarin? how is shanghainese different from putonghua in beijing (aside from not having the R's at the end of every word)? and is the night life as fun in beijing as it is in shanghai? i plan on enrolling in a 12 week or 1 sem program to be able to really practice using the language. thanks!!
