Xinjian Road and Renmin Road Tunnel

Before I know it, two other tunnels cross the Huangpu River opened at the end of the last year: Xinjian Road 新建路隧道and Renmin Road Tunnel 人民路隧道. Along with Fuxing Tunnel 复兴路隧道, Yan’an East Road Tunnel 延安东路隧道, and Daliang Road Tunnel 大连路隧道, there are 5 tunnels in the area.

The Two Tunnels Connected

The interesting thing is, the two tunnels are connected. Cars from the Huaihai Road direction can enter the Renmin Road Tunnel, and exit at either Pucheng Road, or the Century Ave, or choose to continue to enter the Xinjian Tunnel to cross the river again to arrive at the Yangpu District. This is a brilliant design. Traffic from south of Puxi to North of Puxi (Yangpu district) will be en routed to another side of the river (Lujiazui Area), through two connected tunnels.

117 Starbucks in Shanghai Already

I am a Starbucks fan, and I have visited all the 12 Starbucks in Shanghai in a Day in 2003.

Now, Starbucks will enter Sweden, and I was called by a journalist in Sweden today to discuss the impact of Starbucks to Shanghai. It was a very interesting and one hour long conversation, which I may share later.

To my surprise, when I look at Starbucks website, I found out there are already 117 Starbucks Store in Shanghai today. More than 100 Starbucks Store appeared in Shanghai in the last 7 years.

The Most Beautiful Shoreline

This is the most beautiful shoreline I found out during the Hainan trip. It is at Xiangshui Bay (Perfume Bay) at Lingshui County 陵水县, Wanning 万宁, Hainan. With all my courtesy to other great bays in Hainan, like Yalong Bay, or Shimei Bay, the Xiangshui Bay is the most blue, most pure and most natural bay I saw. Let me share some photos.

Below the construction site of a private residential area. I am wondering why the government turned this this 4.2 km long of beautiful bay to a private land that only few people can enjoy.

I especially love the frog surrounded mountain in the far left. It is called Niuling (Ox Ridge).

Fireworks for God of Fortune

There are great fireworks on the 180 degree view of my window right now. According to the Chinese tradition, the 5th of the New Year is the day the God of Fortune will arrive at your home. People need to fire great fireworks to welcome him to arrive.

I paid attention to this tradition only after I am in Shanghai, since I noticed the fireworks in Shanghai on the night of the 4th of the New Year is even more intensive than the New Year Eve!

This special night is also the best time for many housewives to start to review the balance sheet, cash flow or whatever financial metrics they have for the family.

I have Driven Around Hainan

Just to report that I have driven around the Hainan island during the holiday.

Day 1 – Sanya to Jianfengling Ridge and stayed at a Taohuayuan Hostel

Day 2 – Jianfengling to Haikou and stayed at HNA Grand Hotel

Day 3 – Haikou to Wenchang

Day 4 – Wenchang to Wanning via Qionghai

Day 5 – Wanning to Sanya and stayed at a B&B (without breakfast)

The whole trip, including some branches of the trip, is 1000 km in distance, and took about 500 RMB in gas, and 1000 RMB in car rental.

Enabled PubSubHubbub on my Blog

I am excited about the PubSubHubbub project, and was amazed by its simplicity and scalable design.

I finally downloaded the MovableType PubSubHubbub plugin and installed it 5 minutes ago. If it works as it is expected to work, and after Google Buzz and other crawler update my RSS XML the next time, the magic will happen. You will start to see my blog post in real time (well, almost real time by few seconds delay) in your Google Buzz. With more and more services supporting PubSubHubbub, more and more people will see this real time functionality.

What is it

Simply put, PubSubHubbub, despite of the weird name, is a very easy and simple protocol.

Every time I hit the “Save” button in my MovableType editing page, it will ping a server called http://pubsubhubbub.appsport.com (it can be any other similar services, I just used it as an example), and that server will ping all the subscribers, like Google Buzz, to tell them something has happened. Then they will get back to my blog to get the latest entry. That replace the current pull method – readers needs to check at an interval – waste of time, and can be huge delay.

Real Time Web

The web is continuously changing. I am excited to enter the real time web today.

My First Car Rental Experience in Hainan

I just realized the difference between China and US is less and less obvious. Let me give you some signs. The recent development is car rental. We tried our first car rental in Sanya this holiday, and it worked almost as well as in the US.

Price

The price is twice as high as in US: 330 RMB/day (or 50 USD/day) for Toyota Yaris vs 25 USD/day at AVIS. However, that also reflected the price of cars (twice as high) and other related costs in China – like all kinds of difference taxes, and fees paid to the government related to car ownership.

Reservation

Reservation is more complicated than US, but still easy to use. We used this company’s service this time: http://www.hainan365.com/. Their reservation telephone is 0898-66287008.

The good thing is, they have a dedicated person to help you – you can always call her mobile phone to make arrangement.

Pickup and Return

In US, it is pretty standard – you directly drive to the AVIS car return at the garage, park the car there, and it is.

For this car company, they offer to provide the car to the hotel of where you stay at 50 RMB service fee. You can make reservation to their people and you can return the car at the domestic departure level – the exact location where your friends or taxi will drop you off at airport. You give the car to the person coming to pick up the car, and you enter the airport – even better than AVIS. The only concern is, you have to make a phone call to make appointment to the person.

Car Condition

This time, the Yaris is only 10,000 KM in mileage, a very new car. We returned it at 11000 KM. The car is very nice – just as any new car. It is automatic shift, and come with empty gas – you need to fill in the gas yourself, and return it with empty gas.

I will Always Rent!

For my next trip to Sanya, I will always rent a car. For my travel in other places like Hainan – a place with wonderful scenery, not a city like Shanghai – I will definitely rent a car again. There are more and more car rental companies in China emerging, like 1hai.cn, Zhizun. I am sure in 5 years, car rental can be a big industry and will become the new lifestyle in China.

I am on Google Buzz

If you are also on it, you can follow me by searching me by either

  • jianshuo
  • Jian Shuo Wang
  • Wang Jian Shuo

in the Search of Google Buzz.

So far, I love what Buzz delivers – real time, and deep integration, a quick and handy interface and a solid existing network dug from the email contacts network.

Wenchang to Wanning

Let me upload some photos on the way from Wenchang 文昌 to Wanning 万宁. I just realized Flickr’s image was blocked in China these days. So… use your own ways to access these photos.

My Comment on Yaris

We rented a Toyota Yaris for several days. That was much better than I expected. I love this small car. The storage system in the car is especially well designed. We chose this car just because all other cars were fully booked out, and it turned out to be a good choice. BTW, it is 330 RMB per day.

The Yaris I rented

Freeway in Hainan is Free

When I can rent a car, the life in Hainan is very like in US, like the Silicon Valley – I only mean the scenery. Another thing that is so similar to US is, all the expressway is free. It is not actually free since the fee is included in gas, but it is so convenient that you can drive up and down at any exit without the trouble of queuing, and payment. A small thing made is so different experience.

The Sinopec has superstore at each gas station – like the US, and for the first time, I feel the importance! It is much easier for a car owner to access convenient store at gas station in busy downtown.

Coconut Forrest

We stayed in the Coconut Forrest at Dongjiao 东郊椰林 during the Chinese New Year Eve.

The beach looks very nice, and actually it is the view on a Chinese stamp before.

The beach

The small wooden house looks nice, but actually, it is the worst hotel I have stayed in recent years. It was funny that we spent the New Year Eve there, watching the New Year Party on CCTV with the small and lousy TV set.

Yifan’s Gardening Work

Before the lunch of the New Year Eve, Yifan spent 20 minutes carefully choosing his favorite stone, and place it along the road.

Very Disappointed in Haikou

I was very disappointed by the city of Haikou. In the most broad sense of classification, Chinese cities can be divided into charming cities, big cities, and ugly cities. In my personal experience, there are two cities in my ugly city list: Haikou, and Changsha.

Look at the view outside the 16th floor of my hotel. Maybe I am here just at the wrong season?

Sanya Bay

Unlike Yalong Bay, the 5-star hotel bay, the Sanya Bay is still highly utilized as a transportation hub. From our hotel window on the 7th floor, we see the whole bay with many boats:

Although it has limited hotel facility, but looking out, the vast area is public ports – noisy, but exciting.

The artificial Phoenix Island raises from nothing with the ambition to beat Dubai. The 7-star hotels are under construction. (I am always confused about what 7-star means. Is it accepted standard?)

On contrast, Yalong Bay is just tree, water, and islands.

When we arrived in Haikou, we didn’t find anything close to either Sanya Bay or Yalong Bay yet. We are very disappointed about it.

Yifan on the Road

To have Yifan with us was less challenging was we thought. Yifan is such a nice boy and he plays nicely with us most of the time. Trip with Yifan makes it harder than just Wendy and me, but it adds so much fan.

Yifan wearing Wendy’s swimming glasses.

Yifan’s second favorite after elevator in Sanya: the electronic trolley car. We don’t have trolley car in our hotel, so Yifan took the chance to touch it, or “ride” it when it is parked. Yifan loves the car so much that we pretend to be another hotels’ guest so he can ride for half minute, before we were discovered. Embarrassing is the father, and exciting is the son.

Besides the trolley car, Yifan loves to be on the back seat of his father’s bike.

People loves Yifan when we go. He got all kinds of gift from people around him: balloons, candies and small toys.

The good thing is, he eats well, and tried many new things, like coconut.

And he sleeps much more than at home, so we have to adjust our pace to fit his schedule, so we missed breakfast in the morning, and watching the pool beside window in afternoons.

Yifan has not waked up yet, in this quiet morning. The little man is tired…

Travelogue – Haikou, Hainan

5 Star Hotel

I am at the HNA Mingguang Grand Hotel in Haikou. This is maybe one of the cheapest 5 star hotels – 450 RMB per night. Compared to the 10K+ RMB crazy price for hotels in Yalong Bay in Sanya, and 800+ RMB village hotels, this seems shocking. Their service and hardware are 5-star hotel standard, at least based on my personal rating system…. Interestingly, they offer to issue boarding pass at the hotel lobby.

West Expressway

The day started from Jianfengling Ridge National Park at around K250 of West Expressway. Then we drove all the way up along the West Expressway from Sanya to Haikou, the capital of Hainan.

The expressway system in Hainan is pretty simple – a big circle connecting the Haikou on the north, and Sanya on the south. The west part is called West Line, and the east part, the East Line.

As many travelogue has already mentioned, the West Expressway is pretty boring. But to be fair, it is that type of boring nice scene with green tropical trees and plants covers the land. There is no industry, no business, and even no villages along the 300 km expressway.

The Hainan Expressway is all free. I am not used to driving up to an expressway in China without going through the toll gate. The fee is included in gas price – it is 7.32 RMB/liter for 93# gas as of today, about one RMB higher than Shanghai. That explains why Toyota and Honda almost dominate the car market so far – gas saving…

I Really Love Interaction of Buzz

If there is anyway that I can post my blog as easy as that in Google Buzz, and get my comment, and reply to it as easy as in Buzz, that would be wonderful. (A typical Twitter message, but it seems not the right length for a blog post on my regular blog. See the difference?)

Regarding Buzz, I commented: “Buzz puts us into further to the center of distraction”.

P.S With all the competing products and services, MovableType (my favorite), was again thrown out of the conversation further. Six Apart had Motion, a similar idea, but far behind what Google offered: just like Notepad vs Gmail…

I am in Sanya

I started my vacation in Sanya. This is (hmm…. let me count, one, two, three (stayed in villa 5), four…) fourth time I am in Sanya.

We will spend the Spring Festival in Sanya and Hainan. Although it is getting super expensive these days in Sanya, the weather, the sea, and the swimming pool treated us very well.

8.8 mm

This is a show of the annual dinner at the beginning of this week.

Here is the transcript in Chinese.

For people who don’t understand Chinese, it is an exaggerated show imitating whose on the TV commercial selling things in Chinese TV stations.

Yifan’s Latest Picture

Yifan grows fast.

Recently, he started to ask hard-to-answer questions.

Once he pointed to a No-Smoking sign, and asked me what it is. I said it means no smoking. Yifan asked me what is smoking. I said to have cigarettes, and he continued to ask why people have cigarettes….

Yifan loves train. His favorite entertainment is to ride Metro with us. He will stand and wave to every train and say “Byebye!”

Wendy bought him a small rolling suite case – like the one people take at airport. He loved it so much that he take it with him where ever he goes, and even put it in his bed at nights.

People are Basically Good

What is the true meaning of this sentence:

People are basically good

That is the founding principle eBay was founded. Someone said it was John Locke (a person I am having strong interest in today) said that, although I suspect that. It is the base of many faith.

My naive question is: what is the true meaning of it? What is the philosophical meaning of it?

Anyone wants to point me to a good book about this?
